Well, this is pretty special. 💙

I’m incredibly honoured to be named one of Mount Royal University’s 2026 Outstanding Alumni Award recipients. @mountroyaluniversity @mrualumni

MRU is where I learned how to turn my love of storytelling, community and communications into a career — and, eventually, into Shareworthy. More than 15 years later, it’s still a place I feel deeply connected to, whether I’m guest speaking, mentoring students, welcoming MRU grads onto our team, or finding other excuses to get back into a classroom.

I’ve been very lucky to build a career around something I genuinely love: helping people discover the artists, experiences and ideas worth leaving the house for — and helping make Calgary a place where arts and culture feel accessible, exciting and part of everyday life.

None of that happens alone. @shareworthypr has grown because of the brilliant people who have worked alongside me, the clients who have trusted us with their stories, the mentors who gave me opportunities early on, and the community that continues to show up.

A very special thank you to Kimberly Gray (@graylyforward), who I had the joy of going to school with at MRU and who went on to teach, for putting my name forward for this honour in the first place — and to Toyin Oladele (@icaialberta) and Shelley Youngblut (@youngblutshelley) for supporting the nomination. It means so much to have people I admire believe my work was worthy of this recognition.

To be recognized by the school that helped start it all feels wonderfully full circle. 💙

I’m so looking forward to celebrating with the other recipients and formally accepting this honour on November 18. 💙

Thank you, MRU — and congratulations to my fellow 2026 recipients. I’m very proud to be in your company.

2025 brought me blissful happiness, big challenges, true love, the beauty of mentorship, deep friendship, career highs, cancer, community, great reality tv, travel - all at once, never letting up. I learned a lot of about asking for help, and what it feels like to be cared for well. Celebrated some major wins. Climbed cringe mountain. Honestly, it was my hardest and happiest year yet. Here’s to 2026 - because we really *never know* what is coming next. Cheers to the not knowing, and being together to find out. 🥂. by @alexkgt

Friends, Iet me tell you about a journey I’ve been on this year…

Earlier this year, my doctor spotted a ’shadow’ on my kidney when looking at an unrelated x-ray. A few tests later, and it turned out to be an ‘incidental discovery’ of a rare form of cancerous tumour, and my ✨life was changed✨. Within weeks, the little thing they accidentally found put me in the hands of a superhero team of doctors who scanned, biopsied, and lab-coated their way to a diagnosis, and the unfortunate conclusion that I’d have to undergo nephrectomy surgery to remove the tumour, and potentially, the kidney with it. They were thorough and careful, but aggressive, and I’m very grateful.

Super scary and definitely not easy, but the great news was that kidneys are tough little buggers — they’re hard-walled and aren’t high risk for fast-spreading, and in many cases (like mine!) their cancers can be totally cured with removal. We also have TWO - like the royals, there is in an heir and a spare. And people can live perfectly normal lives with just one.

Still, even with all of that to keep me positive, it’s difficult to put into words what it feels like to hear the c word. Surreal/terrifying/shocking. I will never forget that moment. And I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Leaving the office that day felt like being boarded onto a rocket ship I didn’t sign up for - blast off, you’re on the cancer ride now. Hold on tight.

I’ve now completed the surgery, and I’m proud to say that: the surgeon is confident that *the cancer is gone* (proud, relieved, grateful), and equally happy that they were able to save part of my kidney, which with my tumour’s size and location, was a small miracle. So while these past few months of hospitals and recovery have been wildly humbling (aka: the hardest f*cking thing I have ever done) and a huge amount of work for the generous people caring for me, I’m on the mend now, and ready to take on the next phase (testing, confirmations, etc.). Bring it on.
