What’s the best age for Playful Portraits? 🧐

A question I get a lot! While there are no age restrictions for Playful Portraits, I have found that there is a bit of a sweet spot.

Around 4 months is when babies start to have the neck control to hold their heads up for a few minutes at a time. We do tummy time for this age, and as long as the babes can see their people close by, they are often VERY happy for Playful Portraits!!!

Of course there are phases of stranger danger, and in these situations we often have babies sit on their adult’s lap! It’s a bit of an ab workout for you 😅 but it works!! (Don’t worry: I’ll crop you out!)

4-5 years is my specialty. This age is so fun. They get the jokes, they love the games, and they enjoy teaching ME a thing or two.

At these Playful Portrait pop-ups I have photographed babies as new as 3 weeks and I’ve also photographed 18 year olds! Kids over 8 seem to feel a little old for Playful Portraits, but we just adjust our approach to accommodate the more *mature* audiences. 😉 No peek-a-boo for them 😅

Playful Portraits were created to document your babies as they grow. Seeing your littles every few months and photographing them as they evolve into tiny humans is the best part of my job.

How it started ➡️ How it’s going 🥹

The Buddy Walk is an event held by the National Down Syndrome Society every year in NYC. The walk kicks off at Times Square, right after a slideshow presentation. 500 individuals are chosen to appear on the Jumbotron throughout the slideshow, celebrating the beauty + diversity that our friends with Down syndrome bring to our community and to our world.

I am honored that one of my Playful Portraits was chosen for the 2025 slideshow in Times Square. Photographing Finn was one of my all-time favorite Playful Portrait experiences. He is so full of joy and personality, and he lights up the room.

What is a playful portrait pop-up?!?

So glad you asked 😉 These 5-minute sessions are a fun, modern alternative to traditional school photos. Classic, black-and-white images of your littles in the spotlight, full of personality and the opposite of stuffy. I partner with other local businesses to host these pop-ups in their shops, and make a TON of friends along the way!

The great thing about it for YOU is you only purchase the images you love. The great thing about it for ME is I learn cool facts from your kids about things like river otters.

🚨Our LAST Playful Portrait pop-up of the year is HERE!!! 🚨

I’m so happy to be at my very own @thebrightroomstudio for this event. If you haven’t visited our space, I hope you’ll book a spot and come see it on NOVEMBER 7!!!

We will be set up from 9:30 am - 12:30 pm, reservations are by appointment only. Pricing info, FAQs + booking links will go out to the waitlist on Tuesday, October 6th. Its hard to imagine fall being here when it’s 1749 degrees outside… but it IS time!

Here’s a little update on where our calendar stands…

2 Playful Portrait time slots are available for our September pop-up at @cartermillerhillcrest 🥳

1 mini-session is available for Monday, November 2 🍁

I have room for 2 full weekday sessions 🍂

Would LOVE to schedule 2 more newborn sessions this year 🥰

Came off my morning workout feeling HOT with opinions

Unless you live under rocks (which honestly, sounds nice), you’ve probably read about AI being used in some pretty horrific ways.

I want to be very clear about something…

We are all in agreement that our number one priority as parents is to keep our kids safe.

Please understand: You have every right to hire a photographer and ask that your images be kept private.

You do NOT have to sign a model release.

You NEVER have to agree to your images being used in ways you don’t want them used.

You should NOT have to pay extra for declining to sign a model release.

I want you to know that I take this seriously. I am working on some updates to my contracts and business practices in order to address some of these concerns.
