Waves of brilliant white polo shirts hurry past this morning as the year 7’s start their new journey at secondary school. Wishing them all the best but today we are celebrating that for the first time in 19 years Back to School has rien, nada, nichts, NOTHING to do with us! 🥳

Trying to drum up some nostalgia but all I feel is liberation (and a tad bit of annoyance that the traffic is back😂).

Got a notification in my calendar yesterday to remind me that today is my son’s 18th birthday. That wasn’t necessary. Not least because it marks my own anniversary on the parenting journey A moment in time indelibly printed on my mind.

However, more importantly all year long the reminders of moving forward to this legal age of adulthood in the UK have been flowing uncontrollably into our existence. He started his final year of school, passed his driving test, received university offers, embarked on solo travel, got the razor out more frequently😀 amongst other things. It’s been a lot to process but I am pleased for him. He is ‘lifeing’ through the stages in his own way as it should be. All credit to the village as always.

I don’t know who decided that 18 was an appropriate age to be considered an adult. What I do know is that no matter what privileges the law affords young people at 18 the question for each parent is:

“Is MY child ready to fledge?”

Don’t let the law dictate the timing of your parenting. Let your child show you. I’m watching mine, processing and learning.

Had a great time labrishing with these incredible storytellers yesterday at Black British Book Festival on our Writing Windrush Forward Panel. And when we finished working the Green Room lime was sublime!

Celebrating Jamaica’s 63rd Anniversary of Independence this month at The @jamaica_national_bank UK Headquarters in London, at the kind invitation as guest of their Executive Corporate Affairs & Public Policy Director Paulette Simpson CBE, was an honour, allowing me to take time out to honour our beautiful island, its people, our rich and eclectic heritage and all we have achieved and trailblazed Globally within a multitude of industry sectors.

The evening was hosted by Curator of Caribbean Cultural Performance and Artforms, @allybampally Althea Wolfe, and we were treated to an entertaining soirée of folk singing, readings, the sound of reggae & Jamaican jazz music and the spoken word, followed by book signings to our delight.

Performances by @fabian_m_thomas & @barefootislandgirlja Judith Falloon-Reid, evoked emotions as well as laughter, leaving us deep in thought and highly entertained.

Readings and poetry shared from their own books, reminded us from whence we came to be present now, positively making a difference, breaking boundaries and reaching infinite heights in Jamaica and the world!

Special Guest and Founder of the @caribbeanglobalaward, Dr Michaelene Holder-March @michaeleneholdermarch who was present, expressed how hugely entertaining the evening was, demonstrating the importance of keeping our heritage and culture alive.

Thank you The Jamaica National Group for keeping us financially balanced since opening your doors in Kingston, Jamaica over 150 years ago, and for providing your services here in the UK for the Jamaican Diaspora and providing a space to help us to stay culturally balanced within the community with events such as this one.
