From May to June this year, we had the pleasure of showing our KHÍA stools in the group exhibition « Positions on Freedom. Design and Its Boundaries », curated by the thing Magazine @the.thing.magazine.

« Positions on Freedom. Design and Its Boundaries » was on view at Museum Angewandte Kunst (Museum of Applied Arts) in Frankfurt, Germany, in the framework of World Design Capital 2026.

The exhibition, realised as part of the thing Fellowship, explores how freedom can be expressed, and how its tensions can be negotiated between institutional structures and corporate interests.

Hand-cut mother-of-pearl inlaid into stainless steel, material sample.

One of 30 tiles from our materials library, developed as part of “Héritages Nacrés”, a body of work exploring the traditional craft of mother-of-pearl inlay in Vietnam.

The research was developed during our residency at Villa Saigon, supported by the French Institute in Vietnam @ifvhcmv in 2025.

Chú Linh’s shell collection, Tú Bon, Bình Dương

Part of this research looks at nacre at its source. In Vietnam, mother-of-pearl exists as a secondary material stream alongside the country’s cultured pearl-farming industry. Once the oyster reaches the end of its productive cycle, its shell is cut, sanded and transformed into mother-of-pearl blanks.

In the centre of this image is the green sea snail, another shell commonly collected along Vietnam’s coast, valued both as a food source and for its shell. The shell can be cut along its spiral and flattened into long strips of nacre (see next pic).

Anh Hùng’s workshop in Chuyên Mỹ, Hà Nội.

Today, Anh Hùng mainly works on lacquer paintings inlaid with mother-of-pearl, as well as small decorative objects. Seating and tables adorned with nacre are no longer produced in his workshop, reflecting the decline in demand for traditional furniture with shell inlay.

Every single piece is drawn, traced, hand-carved and cut, then set into wood using natural lacquer.
Here, we can see the different types of shell blanks used in the process, including oyster and snail shells.

Part of our research involved experimenting with laser cutting as an alternative to the traditional hand-cutting process.

Each mother-of-pearl blank is different, with its own shape, pattern and imperfections. We scanned and traced every piece, placing our designs onto the individual shells to make sure they would fit.

Although the laser cutter allowed us to achieve very intricate details, the process reinforced our appreciation for the hand craft and the small imperfections that make the shell work unique.

We went through multiple phases of experimentation, peeling back raw shells layer by layer, scanning them and tracing their patterns again taken in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam by @amalgamestudio

KHÍA Stools, 2026
Mother-of-pearl, Stainless steel

Initiated during our research residency at Villa Saigon @ifvhcmv (2025), KHÍA explores the evolving craft of Vietnamese mother-of-pearl inlay.

Khía, meaning “to carve” or “to sculpt,” translates this declining tradition onto the everyday metal stool found across Vietnam.

By combining an anonymous industrial object with a delicate craft, the KHÍA stool reflects on how disappearing artisanal knowledge can find new relevance in a landscape shaped by mass production.

KHÍA is on show at « TOUT EST CHAOS » by @pli_office at @gaitelyrique during Paris Design Week ☁️🤍☁️ Don’t miss it!

Rooted in Vietnamese and East Asian carpentry traditions, the TABI stool draws on the visual language of carved animal legs in furniture.

Nodding to the intricate dragon claws and lion feet, symbols of strength and empowerment, TABI reinterprets these forms with flared legs and a split-hoof detail.

The stool is finished using shou sugi ban, charring the timber to bring out a deep, uneven surface and accentuate the grain.

TABI was made as part of the 3 Weeks of Design HCMC furniture competition by @gallerymedium and nominated for Best Fabrication.
