Amalgame Studio’s (@amalgamestudio) COWGIRL collection explores steel as a living, timeworn surface. Through controlled oxidation, the metal retains the marks of time, becoming an archive of memory and resilience. Designed for Toro Manifesto (@toromanifesto), the collection pays homage to Mexico’s disappearing vaquera tradition, carrying the legacy of territory, labour, and domestication in everyday objects.

Founded in Guadalajara in 2024 by designers Emmie Massias (@emmiemassias) and Marine Col (@col_marine), Amalgame Studio explores the relationship between territory, material culture and contemporary design. A nomadic, satellite studio working between Ho Chi Minh City, Paris and Adelaide, the duo investigates how traditional techniques can evolve within present-day contexts by engaging with regional materials and craft traditions.

KHÍA Stools, 2026
Mother-of-pearl, Stainless steel

Initiated during our research residency at Villa Saigon @ifvhcmv (2025), KHÍA explores the evolving craft of Vietnamese mother-of-pearl inlay.

Khía, meaning “to carve” or “to sculpt,” translates this declining tradition onto the everyday metal stool found across Vietnam.

By combining an anonymous industrial object with a delicate craft, the KHÍA stool reflects on how disappearing artisanal knowledge can find new relevance in a landscape shaped by mass production.

KHÍA is on show at « TOUT EST CHAOS » by @pli_office at @gaitelyrique during Paris Design Week ☁️🤍☁️ Don’t miss it!

Rooted in Vietnamese and East Asian carpentry traditions, the TABI stool draws on the visual language of carved animal legs in furniture.

Nodding to the intricate dragon claws and lion feet, symbols of strength and empowerment, TABI reinterprets these forms with flared legs and a split-hoof detail.

COWGIRL Coffee table,
Carbon steel with rust details

In a horizon where cattle have vanished, 𝘭𝘢 𝘷𝘢𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘳𝘢 carries on the legacy of her ranch. Her home becomes an archive of domestication, labour, and care, where everyday objects carry forward the spirit of the cowgirl.

COWGIRL Chair and Dining table for @toromanifesto, launched at Art Week Mexico 2026 with @unique_design_x_group

The COWGIRL collection explores steel as a living, timeworn surface.

Through controlled oxidation, the industrial material becomes a register of time, transforming hardness into the memory of skin.

Curated by Vera Sacchetti (@vsacchetti) and Anton Rahlwes (@anton_rahlwes)
On view at Museum Angewandte Kunst
(@museumangewandtekunst) in Frankfurt, Germany

„Positions on Freedom. Design and Its Boundaries“ is an official project within the framework of World Design Capital 2026 (@wdc2026) and was realised as part of the thing Fellowship, an initiative by the thing Magazine. Developed in partnership with USM (@usmmodularfurniture) and the Fondation USM, it explores how freedom can be negotiated within the tension between institutional structures and corporate interests.

The Cowgirl collection, designed by Amalgame Studio for Toro Manifesto, explores steel as a living, timeworn surface. The collection’s delicate straight and angular lines introduce another layer to observe — subtle gestures that sharpen its tension between structure and fragility. In a horizon where cattle have vanished, the cowgirl remains.
