In 1974, Charles Atlas had only just become choreographer Merce Cunningham’s filmmaker-in-residence when he visited dancer Douglas Dunn in his Broadway loft. Atlas set his Super 8 on a tripod, trained it on the floor, and marked out its frame of reference. Dunn’s feet appear at the very edges of the frame while the centre remains empty. He ends the film—the nearly four-minute-long Floor—sprawled face down across the frame’s centre. While the film’s interest in fragmentation is an expression of Cunningham’s radical approach to dance, Floor also speaks to Atlas’ mischievous brilliance. ⁠

As an exhibition of the artist’s single‑channel works opens in London, he talks to Amie Corry (@amiecorry) about the importance of irony, his love of numbers and his ambivalence about contemporary video culture.⁠

Anish Kapoor was one of the first artists to take on a @_hospitalrooms project back in 2018.

Now @anish.kapoor has made our final edition in the 10 Posters for 10 Years campaign. It's the culmination of a mammoth series of projects to mark our anniversary and help transform NHS mental health hospitals. This project also involves distributing 10,000 artworks directly to acute, secure and locked mental health hospitals via Digital Art School.

Poster launches @friezeofficial tomorrow for £100. They'll be available until 24 October only.

Thank you to all the amazing people and our 10 Year Committee for making this happen. And of course to @anish.kapoor and his studio.

Artist residencies at SRM give artists free studio space and time to develop musical and artistic projects.
We welcomed Amie Corry as a resident at the studio. @amiecorry is a London based writer and editor whose work has appeared in publications including frieze, AnOther, Worms, the Times Literary Supplement, Art Monthly, RA Magazine, Flash Art and Gagosian Quarterly. She has written for monographs and edited books with Tate, MACK and Mary DelMonico. Amie also chairs Hospital Rooms, an arts and mental health organisation working with artists, service users and staff in psychiatric hospitals. In 2019, she co-founded Primadonna, a books and ideas festival.

During her time at the studio, Amie completed a novel exploring value across three moments in London’s art world. She also researched a new project looking at encounters between psychoanalysis and religious communities in the mid-twentieth century. by @amiecorry

Plus talks and performances including NHS staff and the @thekingdomchoir , spearheaded by the amazing @s_i_p_h_i_w_e Thank you so much to the Victoria Miro team; a true model for partnerships with the gallery sector.

And this 💫 Wednesday 16 Sept, 6PM BST, is the Hospital Rooms 10 YEAR AUCTION 💫 @bonhams1793 , feat work by Hurvin Anderson, Veronica Ryan, @maryluciastephenson @dohosuhstudio @caraghthuring @victoriacantons @sikelelaowen @nengiomuku and many more who've supported Hospital Rooms over the past decade.

100% funds will go towards transforming psychiatric wards through collaborative art practices. It's dire out there at the moment, we need your help to change the landscape of mental health provision.

Beautiful posters by some of the best!

Ten years ago, @_hospitalrooms began with one ward and one belief: that everyone receiving mental health care deserves to be surrounded by extraordinary art.

To mark the anniversary, we are releasing time-limited posters by amazing artists for £100 each.

We’re also sending one of each to every NHS inpatient mental health site in England, that's 10,000 artworks going up on the walls of mental health units in 2026.

Chairing @_hospitalrooms is one of the great privileges of my life.

The project at Goodmayes @nelftnhstrust was built by 291 participants over 36 workshops, plus workshops at @vam_east and a choir for global majority Goodmayes staff led by @thekingdomchoir – true collaboration between patients, NHS staff, artists and the Hospital Rooms team.

It's hard to describe the strength of feeling, the warmth and joy that emanated from the trust last week. The art doesn't seek to 'take you out' of its environment, or offer fantasy – Joy Labinjo's exquisite mural shows people resting, communing and exercising in the courtyard of the trust; Lonnie Holley's inquisitive profiles reach for something inside as well as out; Sutapa's landscape rolls towards the heart of the building, plus so many more sensitive and beautiful approaches. It's work that offers its own form of shelter – as Lakwena puts it – and energy.

Hospital Rooms celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. The work feels more urgent than ever. While we're increasingly well versed in discussing mental health, those suffering severe mental illness – who often, uncoincidentally, are victims of entrenched systemic inequalities – remain stigmatised, and the environments meant to hold them, beleaguered at best. Tim, Niamh and the team keep pushing at this discourse and more importantly, enacting real-world change. It touches so many people.

Such a privilege to speak with @natasha___hoare and @marianaamlemos for @anothermagazine ahead of the opening of Flare-Up at @goldsmithscca

There is such joy and humour, as well as pain, ingenuity and sheer aesthetic and formal mastery in this show.

A “flare-up” is shorthand for an intensification of symptoms. Natasha explains that it also, “points to affect’s importance, in terms of a flare of light, bringing light to areas often obscured, but also a kind of celebration.” It’s a suitably capacious framework for the show.

Crip discourse and strategies tackle a paucity of language for communicating the varied experiences of sickness and disability. This paucity intersects with poverty, isolation and physical barriers to making. Creative access adjustments fed brilliantly into the exhibition-making and curation of Flare-Up, as well as the work. This doesn't have to be an afterthought or tickbox exercise.

Constellations of citation recur throughout – this is more than influence. Mariana describes it beautifully as a mode of community-building that “creates company in isolation”, as well as pointing to ancestral lineage.
