A beloved classic: 84 Charing Cross Road, by Helene Hanff.

This funny, poignant story unfolds through a series of letters between Helene Hanff, a freelance writer living in New York City and a used-books dealer in London. Through the years, though never meeting, and separated geographically, they form a charming friendship based on their common love for books.

The book was also a basis for a film, starring Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft.

A highly recommended, delightful story!

"Yesteryear" by Caro Claire Burke.

The novel follows, self-professed "flawless Christian woman" Natalie Heller Mills, who wakes up one morning to find herself mysteriously transported back in time to 1855 pioneer America.
Has she really time travelled? Is this an awful reality TV show? A message from God? Or has she lost her mind?

A captivating debut novel, that explores the world of "traditional wife" influencers and in the process expose their hypocritical tendencies.

A compulsive, pacey read - highly recommend!👍🏻

Summer reading: "Four Seasons in Japan" by Nick Bradley 🌊📖⛱️

A feel good, wholesome, heartwarming story set in the small coastal town of Onomichi, Hiroshima in Japan. It's a book within a book, about family, relationships, failure and following one's dreams.

If you enjoy stories set in Japan, I highly recommend this gorgeous book! 📖

A trio of #penguinclassics for the month of October:

The Secret History, by Donna Tartt:

A thriller set in the academia world. When Richard Papen joins an elite group of clever misfits at his New England college, it seems he can finally become the person he wants to be. However the moral boundaries he will cross with his new friends, will change all of their lives forever!

Inferno, by Dante Alighieri (Italian poet, writer & philosopher) written 700 years ago. The book explores profound themes such as sin, redemption, morality and the human condition, making it relatable across cultures and eras!

Tales of the Unexpected, by Roald Dahl. It's a delightfully dark collection of sixteen stories, each with a startling end!

What's a Penguin Classic you'd recommend? 📖

Katabasis by R.F. Kuang.

The story follows, two graduate students in "analytick magick" who journey to hell to rescue the soul of their professor who died in a freak magick accident. Our protagonists, Alice and Peter, wish to bring their professor back to life, so he can write them recommendation letters which will help them get jobs in the very competitive world of Magick Academia postings.

A fantasy novel with a wild and very impressive premise!! However, the story explores the toxic world of academia, drawing attention to student burnout (lack of support), student-teacher dynamics, the normalisation of self harm & psychological damage in the ultimate pursuit of intellectual glory.

The book is also very much a story about self-discovery, self-respect, questioning one's own perceptions, beliefs & choices in a world of contradictions and flawed convictions. A sharp, witty story of resilience in the dark world of academia!

For those interested, in Greek mythology, Katabasis refers to a hero's journey into the underworld (depths of Hell).

If you're a fan of R.F. Kuang's novels, this book is a fantastic read! 👌📖

Currently reading:

"The Emperor of Gladness" by Vietnamese American writer Ocean Vuong.

It's a beautiful, tender story of friendship and how much we're willing to risk for one of life's most treasured mercies: a second chance. A very well written novel, about grace, connection and how the small moments in life, at times, can be most significant!

A stunning book! 📖👌

The story of Australia's first Japanese "war bride" :

At the Foot of the Cherry Tree by Japanese- Australian author and screenwriter, Alli Parker. It's a novelisation of the true story of Alli's grandmother, ( Nobuko Sakuramoto) Cherry Parker who came to Melbourne from Japan after World War II, but only after a long struggle. Alli's grandfather, Gordon Parker (18 years old) volunteered for BCOF (British Commonwealth Occupation Force) in Kure SE of Hiroshima. Following the end of WW2, BCOF was responsible for demilitarisation. There he met 16 years old, atomic bomb survivor, Nobuko (Cherry) and despite strict anti-fraternisation rules between the Australians and Japanese, the two became friends and fell in love.

A captivating war story of love and kindness, cruelty and prejudice.

In 1957, Cherry became the first Asian person to be granted Australian citizenship, though the White Australia policy would only be formally abolished in 1975.

In 2023, a bench was installed at Nagahama Park in Kure, to commemorate Gordon & Cherry's story and remember all the brave war brides who left Japan to join their Australian husbands. The bench was placed underneath a cherry blossom tree.🌸

The People on Platform 5, by British novelist, Clare Pooley.

Every day Iona Iverson boards the train to work and every day she sees the same group of people, but never ever talks to. Seasoned commuters never do!

"Until the point when a man started dying right in front of her on the 08:05, Iona's day had been just like any other."

This one event sparks a chain reaction, and an eclectic group of people with nothing in common but their morning commute discover that a chance encounter can blossom into meaningful connections/friendships.

Nobody speaks to strangers on the train. What would happen if they did?
A fantastic, feel-good, character driven story! Highly recommend it!👌📖

The Overstory by Richard Powers (winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction) 📖

Starting a unique novel that puts plants/trees at the centre of the story. At 600+ pages, it's a complex storyline with super, interesting and diverse characters. This is my first book by Richard Powers and this novel should be on your "bookish radar"!

The pic was taken at Trigg Beach, one of my favourite local spots!
