It’s taken almost 15 years, but we’re finally throwing our hat in the ring for the first time in this year’s round of Grammy voting with our album, Our Inheritance.

Over the past year, we’ve been reminded that art doesn’t have a shelf life. The songs on this album changed our lives 15 years ago, and this music continues to evolve, surprise us, and find new life — most recently with “Quill” and “Inheritance” featured in The Rivals of Amziah King.

It’s been a wild last month. In so many ways last month felt quite nostalgic. I’ve been on tour too many times to count and I’ve met some “Big wigs” but last month felt different. It felt like I was walking a path I had been down before, everything was quite familiar and yet all new. I made new friends, acquired new memories, and had some ridiculous new firsts *cough, *cough -the private jet. Now that life is back to what I know as normal I find myself in a consistent state of grateful. I can’t believe what music has done for me. Most of the people I know and love are because of music. The Last Bison started deep in the swamps of Virginia—an area that most people never visit, let alone think of when thinking of the state. They pass over it and may marvel at it from the air, or drive around it, catching the occasional sign for “The Great Dismal Swamp” on their way to the beach or on their way back west towards the Appalachian Mountains.

It’s forgotten or ignored by many, but for the few of us who have lived there or spent time there, it forms a deep bond with the ancient beauty and spirit of the place—the kind that leaves a lasting mark. The tannins not only dye the water, but seem to color the soul in their own way.

Recently, we returned to that southeastern corner of Virginia to experience the place that, in many ways, formed us. To walk those familiar landscapes again, to remember where so much of the music began, and to reconnect with the wildness, mystery, and quiet that have stayed with us all these years
