We're told to stop worrying, but nobody ever tells us when to start.

Amy Morin (@amymorinauthor) is a psychotherapist and the author of 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do. Her favorite exercise with clients starts from the opposite premise: worry gets a time and a place. Fifteen minutes in the calendar. And when it’s up, it’s up.

What I love about it is that you’re not denying or suppressing anything. You’re just allocating time for all that very healthy nonsense.

Most people say things to themselves they would never say to someone they love.

In my therapy practice, I often hear how harsh people are on themselves when they make a mistake or consider taking a risk.

If a friend came to them with the exact same situation, they would respond with empathy, perspective, and support. But when it's their own inner dialogue, they default to criticism and catastrophizing.

Mental strength isn't about ignoring reality or giving yourself false praise. It's about shifting your self-talk to sound like a trusted friend.

A trusted friend doesn't lie to you or pretend everything is flawless. They tell you the truth, keep things in perspective, and remind you of what you're capable of handling.

Next time you catch your inner critic spiraling, pause and ask yourself one simple question:

"What would I say to a trusted friend in this exact situation?"

Then say those words to yourself. by @amymorinauthor

If someone suspects you’re using AI to talk to them, they’ll judge you more harshly. That’s what researchers at Cornell and Stanford found when they studied the “smart replies” built into messaging apps.

Conversations that used AI moved faster, and people actually felt closer. But that changes the second someone suspected the other person was using AI.

So the AI-polished version of you might backfire and hurt your relationship more than it helps.

As a therapist, I also see what AI is doing for anxiety. It offers unlimited reassurance and can reduce your uncertainty.

AI will answer the fifth time, at 2 a.m., and let you reword the question until it says what you wanted to hear.

That relief feels good. But sometimes the uncertainty is what you need.

Discomfort is what pushes you to apologize when you were too harsh, or to just ask the person what they meant.

I explain more about how AI may be eroding our social skills in my latest article at @bigthink by @amymorinauthor

You’re allowed to disappoint people at work.

People-pleasing is really an attempt to control how other people feel. But you can’t control how other people feel. You can only control what you say yes to.

And every yes is also a no to something else—like your priorities, your time, or your own work.

So the next time an automatic “yes” is on the tip of your tongue, try a different question. Not “Will they be upset?” but “What am I saying no to?”

I wrote about this in my latest article for Fast Company.

I wrote “13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do” for myself.

I was a therapist grieving the loss of my mom and my husband. My father-in-law had just been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

I didn’t have the energy to add any good habits to my to-do list as I faced another loss. So I made a list of what to stop doing.

I read that list every day and it helped me function.

I thought if it helped me, maybe it would help someone else. So I published it online.

I thought a handful of people would see it. But 50 million people read those 600 words.

Media outlets started calling. They assumed that as a therapist and the author of the article, I must have mastered everything on the list.

But I hadn’t. I was still figuring it out alongside everyone else.

At first, I didn’t want anyone to know I was struggling so I didn’t share the backstory. But I had to remind myself that true mental strength isn’t about pretending you have everything under control.

It’s about giving up the habits that are draining you of mental strength.

It’s an issue I help people with in my therapy office often. High achievers under pressure rarely need more pep talks or generic advice to stay positive.

They need honest reminders about the unhelpful habits they fall into when they’re stressed out. Giving up their worst habits frees them up to be their best. by @amymorinauthor

"I'm an anxious person." "I'm an avoidant." "I'm just bad at this."

Listen to how you describe yourself for a day. Then count how many of those start with "I am."

As a psychotherapist, Amy Morin (@amymorinauthor) tells clients to try trading the being verb for a habit—“I have a tendency to,” “I do this sometimes.”

It sounds like a technicality, but it isn't. A tendency is something you can change next time. An identity is something you live up to.

What's one "I am" you'd swap?

Psychotherapist Kier Gaines pointed out the cultural message that therapists have to fight against — trying to change everything at once rarely works.

A better approach to change involves small, micro-adjustments. Making a tiny shift is manageable enough to repeat can be the best way to get unstuck.

On episode 349 of Mentally Stronger, we discuss the 7 Uncomfortable Truths That Are Keeping You Stuck (And What to Do About Each One).

If you’re feeling stuck, this episode could give you what you need to create lasting change in yoru life.

11 years ago, I moved onto a 53-foot sailboat in the Florida Keys.

As a therapist and an author who often appears on tv remotely, I worried what people would think when I didn’t have a traditional office.

But I wrote 5 of my 7 books on this boat. I record my podcast from the living room and I take meetings in my tiki hut.

It’s been a great reminder that mental strength is about deciding what your daily life looks like without trying to meet other people’s expectations about what you should be doing. by @amymorinauthor

Your brain can’t mute some emotions without muting them all. When you numb yourself to grief or anxiety, you accidentally mute joy and pride along with it.

But it’s common to feel numb to your feelings. So on today’s episode of Mentally Stronger, I share:

✅4 types of emotional numbness
✅Why feeling flat drains so much energy
✅How your brain uses numbness as a protective shield
✅4 steps to start bringing your feelings back
