For Ai Weiwei, A Tree

This mother tree. This tree greeted me as I walked the Horsetail Falls trail in the Columbia River Gorge (Oregon, US) hundreds of times. She felt new to me every hike, and I laid my hand on her bark in passing for greetings, for balance.
And then in an instant, she was consumed by a massive fire, started by a young man doing foolish things.
I went back to the trail at 5 AM, years later, the day they reopened it. I ran to her. She was reduced to a black stump, burnt pieces scattered… To say my sobbing was uncontrollable is an understatement.
I saved a small piece, a simple block of charcoal. I have yet to use that piece to draw the tree as I remember her, as I intended. Perhaps I simply can’t bear to see more of her slip away, even onto paper.

Turned this lovely block of doug fir into a relief print block, and then gave it a second life as a side table. It went to a happy home at Block Party 2026, a successful silent auction sponsored by @designwithinreach and @madepdx . I’m going to have to make another one - I really wanted to keep it! :) There’s more carving ahead in my future. ✨ by @amyruppelart

It’s amazing to see my artwork go up after hours and hours of layering ink drawings, and creating color schemes and themes for each floor of a children’s hospital. Hundreds of them. It’s a relief to finally view them in place, and see your vision ending up being just what you imagined it to be. So happy with this project. And that’s mainly due to the architects giving me free reign. Trust your artists and illustrators ❤️ More to come! by @amyruppelart
