A couple of unique frames of the infamous Oceanic Whitetip while on hot approach. For a species with such speed, intelligence, and flexibility this assertive behavior has to be expected by anyone in close proximity to these critically endangered animals. Considering it has likely been quite awhile since the last time this shark found food, unpredictable and erratic movements are the baseline. For a few split seconds in the midst of these rapid changes in movement lie a few unique perspectives on these animals, that with the right amount of luck, can be photographed. DANGER CLOSE // steady eye contact, unbreakable presence of mind, cunning intelligence and sharp reflexes are a sampling of the many well adapted traits that make Oceanic Whitetip Sharks such formidable predators. Often waiting weeks in between meals, Oceanic Whitetips are pushy, assertive, and often aggressive when investigating new points of interest in their environment. In recent dives where we have been lucky enough to find these incredible pelagic sharks we have been using high powered video lights to illuminate their underside for a more even exposure. These lights also work as large flashers emulating fish scales being lit up by the sun which makes these sharks even more inquisitive and raises the likelihood of repeated close proximity encounters. This is not a technique I’d recommend unless in the presence of qualified safety divers. Always grateful for @livfortheocean and @elizabethsides for watching my back in the water. There are few places left in the world where one can see Oceanic Whitetip sharks with any relative consistency. I’m beyond thankful that Kona, Hawaii remains one of those special places. I’m excited to share more about these amazing animals throughout the week. @sharkweek starts now! #sharkweek #oceanicwhitetip #sharkdiving #freedivephotography #nauticamhousings #konahawaii #bigislandhawaii by @andrew.aggergaard

Rough Toothed Dolphins, Steno bredanensis, are one of the more unique dolphin species that inhabit the deep waters around the Hawaiian Islands. Their oversized pectoral fins and slender head and rostrum give them a ‘reptilian’ appearance. The Dino Dolphin nickname stems from their almost prehistoric look. These social and capable hunters are often found wherever the action is. The floaters and FADs stocked with tuna, mahi, and bait often have Stenos lurking on the perimeter waiting to strike. A Tiger Shark and Rough Toothed dolphin in the same frame, taking the same approach, to a camera is not something that happens often. These two predators were hanging around a decaying whale carcass, both taking advantage of an easy meal. The tiger shark eating the carcass itself and the Steno predating the wide variety of fish drawn the carcass. Everybody eats. #roughtootheddolphin #tigershark Rough Toothed dolphins coordinate their hunts with their pod using various techniques to surround and overwhelm their prey. They’ll often take advantage of structure their prey may be sheltering underneath to pin them down. Capable of great speed and maneuverability even fast pelagic fish like Mahi Mahi are no match for a Rough Toothed dolphin. by @andrew.aggergaard

Fuel up the ships and sprint towards the horizon. The great blue expanse holds abundance for those willing to go far enough. It’s another world out there. This is exploration at its most addictive. The deep ocean is exotic and unforgiving and filled with life most people will never see. One day I’m sure we’ll discover something out here that nobody’s ever seen before. #oceanexploration by @andrew.aggergaard

The oceans are our planet’s most valuable resource. The oceans have been an integral part of human civilization since the beginning. Regardless of whether you live in proximity to the ocean or not, you’re inextricably tied to it and all it provides. From the food that sustains billions to the oxygen we all breathe, the ocean takes care of us, sustains us, and binds us together. We’re a seafaring race, and beyond the basic necessities, the ocean is woven into the human soul. For all those who’ve experienced the ocean and the creatures within, it provides a profound sense of joy and calm that can’t be found anywhere else. The longer I’ve spent on the water, in the water, and around the water, the more I’ve fallen in love with it. The more I love the ocean, the more I want to protect it for the divers, the fishermen, the surfers, the sailors, the explorers, and all those who steward our planet’s most precious resource. To protect it for us now and for all those who will come after. Today is World Ocean Day, but the ocean is something we can appreciate every day. by @andrew.aggergaard

There is so much to explore here. Every dive site is a mosaic of vibrant corals and a kaleidoscope of fish twinkling in the sun. Komodo is one of the most captivating places in the world. It’s a place that truly ‘scratches the itch’ for awe and wonder in the world. For those who like the big and the small, the expansive views and tiny details, calm seas and welcoming culture, Komodo will leave you feeling inspired and fulfilled. I cannot wait to return to more of this. Exploring with @mano.collective by @andrew.aggergaard

They are truly ancient predators. Modern Tiger sharks are over 13.5 million years older than humans. They’ve witnessed near-cataclysmic changes to the earth and have remained resilient and unchanged through the chaos. A perfect system maintaining balance in the oceans. They’ve been here a long time before us and with the way things are going, they’ll be here long after we’ve left. We humans are a mere blip in the evolutionary history of sharks. I feel quite fortunate to not only have significant overlap with this species but to be able to observe such a primordial animal at such a close proximity. by @andrew.aggergaard

Fiji’s Bull sharks are a wildly good time and shark diving with them is an endless amount of fun. Having a Bull shark tornado circle only feet away from you is as intense as it is mesmerizing. This must be what it feels like to be part of the frenzy. by @andrew.aggergaard
