Fuel up the ships and sprint towards the horizon. The great blue expanse holds abundance for those willing to go far enough. It’s another world out there. This is exploration at its most addictive. The deep ocean is exotic and unforgiving and filled with life most people will never see. One day I’m sure we’ll discover something out here that nobody’s ever seen before. #oceanexploration

Fiji’s Bull sharks are a wildly good time and shark diving with them is an endless amount of fun. Having a Bull shark tornado circle only feet away from you is as intense as it is mesmerizing. This must be what it feels like to be part of the frenzy.

// Everybody Eats Tiger sharks and their near endless buffet of whale blubber made for one incredible day. These unique feeding events come rarely in Hawaii and are incredibly special to witness. The ocean is a wild and unforgiving place but it is also caring and provides for all it’s inhabitants. Nothing is wasted and everybody gets enough to eat one way or another. The Physeter macrocephalus, meaning ‘large-headed blower’, is one of the most intelligent beings aside from humans on our planet. Specifically intelligence that specializes in sound and language. Evolving in the deep and dark oceans, sound became the dominant sense for Sperm whales. A complex language and well established social structures allow for the accurate transmission of information among family members. Social learning and problem solving abilities paired with their own phonetic alphabet creates a perfect opportunity to decode extra-terrestrial intelligence right here on earth. It’s mind blowing how we have aliens in our backyard. 🛸 #spermwhale #cachalot

The ‘Hammer Season’ off the Kona Coast is notoriously unpredictable. For a few fluctuating weeks of the year the schools can be more consistent. With a bit of luck and focus we’ve been able to find these scalloped hammerheads in large aggregations. Some individuals, often on the out side of the school, are slightly more curious and confident. This is one of those wonderful moments. There’s nothing that makes you feel more like a nail than being right underneath a hammer. #hammerhead #scallopedhammerhead

After feasting on one penguin after another this large group of B2 killer whales, known as Gerlache Orcas, turned their attention onto a couple wayward sea lions. Although B2 killer whales are specialized penguin hunters and rarely consume other prey they will sometimes engage with other animals as a form of entertainment. It is unlikely that the sea lions in question were aware of this nuanced diet of the killer whales. The intense pursuit that fallowed was quite the spectacle and provided one of our most incredible encounters on this mind bending expedition to the ice. 🧊 #antarctickillerwhales #antarctica #icecubes

The deep oceans hold many dangers. The constant uncertainty of the vast blue void is less than ideal for a Humpback mother and young calf. During these first few weeks of life Humpback whale mothers will often seek the protection of calm shallow reef environments. A perfect nursery ground to grow and play for a baby whale. There are few things that compare to seeing a near 50 ft animal hovering over a shallow and pristine coral reef with less than her body length in water depth beneath her. These are the moments that’s immediately fill you with wonder and awe. After a month of travel, a nice Sunday morning dive on the backyard reef was a perfect moment of calm. I always appreciate the reminder of how beautiful Hawaii is even after spending a few weeks in idyllic south pacific islands. There’s lots to share from our time in Tonga and Fiji this year but first let’s take a moment to enjoy the simple wonders of home.

Even out here, miles from shore, in the vast blue desert it’s difficult to escape the presence of human impact. You might not see any other humans for miles but the things we leave behind are becoming more and more prevalent. Finding a large ghost net, like the one shown here, is always a bittersweet moment. On one hand these massive jumbles of durable plastic and line adrift in the void provide a unique substrate for algae to grow upon and a dynamic shelter for small fish and larval creatures to hide beneath. In this case the abundant life utilizing this abandoned purse seine created a perfect area for this Oceanic Whitetip shark to hunt. However these nets can easily cause entanglement, drowning, and death for a variety of marine life. Most gear like this is made of plastic fibers, that slowly break down into microplastics, slowly polluting an otherwise clean environment. Up to 800,000 metric tons of fishing gear can be lost on an annual basis creating up to 70% of global marine litter by volume (10% by weight) in some regions. Whenever possible we remove trash and debris that we find while exploring the ocean but sometimes the shear size and weight of these ghost nets prohibit any practical recovery.
