The food.

For our Les Gourmets dinner at PERILLA Korean American Steakhouse, the menu moved from familiar Korean flavors into a more refined steakhouse format.

The evening opened with sullentang, steak tartare toast and garlic chive pancake, followed by seared scallop, kimchi pork mandu, grilled octopus and Korean fried chicken. The savory courses culminated in marinated Wagyu short rib picanha with ssam and banchan, before finishing with carrot cake layered with persimmon jam, cashew streusel, tofu parfait and gochujang caramel.

A distinctly Korean American menu built around bold flavor, contrast and sharing.

A night at PERILLA

For our next Les Gourmets dinner, we gathered at PERILLA Korean American Steakhouse on the Chicago Riverwalk.

Led by Chef Andrew Lim, and owned and managed by @tomoh44 PERILLA brings together Korean barbecue traditions and the classic Chicago steakhouse experience, with premium cuts, tableside grilling and a distinctly Korean approach to flavor and hospitality.

Located inside the L7 Hotel, the restaurant expands on the vision behind the original PERILLA while creating a more refined steakhouse experience in the heart of downtown Chicago.

About the Chef:

Chef @andrewjlim Executive Chef and co-founder of PERILLA built his career in kitchens including The Bristol, Formento’s, Swift & Sons and Cold Storage before opening his own restaurants. In 2019, Lim opened PERILLA with longtime friend Thomas Oh, creating a restaurant that reflects his perspective as a second-generation Korean American through modern interpretations of Korean food and barbecue. His work earned him a 2026 Jean Banchet Award nomination for Chef of the Year.

Last month, StarChefs and Niman Ranch (@nimanranch) gathered Chicago’s industry folk for an afternoon at Perilla Korean American Fare (@perillafare). Chef Andrew Lim (@andrewjlim) and his team made sure nobody left hungry. Drinks flowed on the patio before moving inside for a proper family-style Korean BBQ spread: scallion pancake, bulgogi, spicy kmari pork, chilled kimchi guksu, and a banchan lineup deep enough to cover the table twice over. Lim worked the tabletop grills himself, keeping the Niman ribeye and pork belly moving while conversations carried on around him.
