Ever since Keir “island of strangers” Starmer took power and successive Home Secretaries have been spouting anti-immigrant rhetoric; jailing the left for protesting whilst emboldening the racist extreme right - allowing them a free pass to put fear into non-white communities and refugees - a mushrooming of racist, anti-immigrant vigilante protest groups has resulted; culminating in last week, a masked-up, extreme right-wing paramilitary-style group organising a co-ordinated blockade of the major port of Dover, without any reaction whatsoever by this govt’s police force. No arrests, nothing. So it was interesting on Saturday to be commissioned by the Observer newspaper to go and cover the latest incarnation of anti-immigrant activity on our streets - this time by the “Portsmouth Patriots”, who then had a face-off with local anti-fascists in Portsmouth town square, determined to drown out the hatred. Luckily, no violence erupted, not least because the police were there in numbers, this time doing their job. My last photo showing the writing on a home-made placard by an anti-fascist summed it up for me.. @theobserveruk #demonstration #photojournalism #standwithrefugees #socialdocumentary #observer by @andyxhall

I Photographed the issue of increasing homelessness for a cover story in the Observer newspaper over the weekend, in response to Andy Burnhams promise to eradicate it by Xmas. All well and good throwing a one-off hundred million at the problem, but policies in the long run are what changes things - a government house-building programme, rent controls, affordable wages, government social provision for ex-offenders, drug addiction and mental healthcare. Otherwise it’s another 100 million further down the line.. @theobserveruk #homeless #reportage #londonstreets #streetphotography #photojournalism by @andyxhall

Spent a day over the weekend for the Observer newspaper taking a look at another typical English summer pastime on the sporting calendar. This time it was showjumping where geldings and glamour descended on London’s Royal Hospital grounds - home of the Chelsea pensioners - to compete on the Longines Global Champions tour for record-breaking prize money. #showjumping #longineschampionstour @theobserveruk #londonlife #worldstreetfeature #reportage by @andyxhall

The Clacton area has figured a lot in the news lately; with the by-election for the unseat being contested in a couple of weeks time. I was sent on a feature by the Guardian with the writer Tim Burrows to take a look at life there and talk to people along the Essex coast that is part of the Clacton constituency; from Jaywick, though Clacton-on-sea and Frinton and as far as
Walton. #clacton #streetphotography #reportage #eyeshot_magazine #guardian @guardian @guardianphotos by @andyxhall

I covered young fashion-conscious fans from all backgrounds watching yesterday’s England match against Norway for the Guardian in Peckham, South East London. As you’d expect, a lively bunch watching Jude Bellingham saving the day again, and taking to the streets at midnight to celebrate. As the writer said, there’s still a recognition of the right-wing, nationalistic connotations of the logo the three lions carries, but for the young people of South East London, there was a sense of pride in reclaiming the emblem to represent a national team that’s more inclusive. #worldcup2026 #peckham #streetphotography #londonstreets #eyeshotmagazine @guardian @theguardian20photos by @andyxhall

I spent the afternoon in the baking heat taking pictures for the Observer, of life in Clacton-on-sea and nearby Jaywick; identified as the most deprived place in England since 2011. The residents didn’t seem fazed by the prospect of Farage contesting another by-election to save his seat as an investigation begins on him not declaring the donation of 5 million given to Reform. “They’re all liars, all corrupt”. #clacton #theobserver #streetphotography #lensonstreets #photojournalism @theobserveruk @the_nerve_news by @andyxhall

Went to photograph for @guardian yet another heatwave - this being the hottest ever June recorded in this country. This time No licking ice creams, no Lounging around in London’s lush parks, no frolicking in fountains. It’s all about fans and brollies to combat the fierce sun and heat.. #streetphotography #heatwave #eyeshotmagazine #lfigallery #guardian @theguardian20photos by @andyxhall

Yet another ceasefire broken by the Zionist regime; yet another international agreement ignored by them as they continue to lay waste to the whole region, disregarding international law and any morals. I remember fondly my photographic assignment for the Observer at the very end of the nineties, to cover Lebanon rebuilding itself after the decades-long civil war. Photographing a beautiful, complex country with beautiful people managing for much of the 2000’s, despite occasional attacks and periodic invasions, (as well as the recent economic hardships) continue to thrive. But now Israel seems to be intent on doing to the Lebanese, what they have and are doing to the Palestinians in Gaza and the west bank. My photo shows a father coming home to his flat in southern Beirut from work to greet his kids. The bullet holes covering his living room wall are from the civil war. I wander if his ( maybe newly-built) flat is now no more.. #lebanon #photojournalism @theobserveruk #fionashields7 #twentyphotos #beirut by @andyxhall

Millwall football club just got a new lease of life that was a massive moment in the history of a club that has kept strong links with it’s largely working class community where football is part of the social fabric. The club’s ground known as the Den, located in south east London - a stones throw away from London Bridge and the City - has won its case to stay where it is, managing to keep the developers and gentrification at bay. My photos accompanied a great article ( penned by @barney.ronay) in the @guardian about Millwalls successful battle. #millwallfc #millwall #football #socialdocumentary #londonstreetphotography by @andyxhall
