2026 is really kicking our asses. 💔

On Sunday, we made the hardest decision pet parents ever have to make.

Zoey was feisty and mouthy but the sweetest little lover. For her, no walk was ever long enough. Whenever it was time for her friends to leave, she would try to fight them. I think she had attachment issues. 😂

She barked at every maintenance man until she finally forced him to pick her up. She wanted ALL the attention on her, even at the dog park or dog beach. At work, she held the position and title of “Barking Director”. She was the enforcer. Or so she thought.

Zoey was a fashionista and LOVED when it was time to put on a new outfit. Because, of course, all attention had to be on her.

She saw us through some really difficult times, including the loss of some of our other fur babies. This time, she needed me to be strong enough to make that difficult decision for her.

Our baby girl Zoey is gone. And this time, she’s not here to comfort us through the grief. 💔

Zoey just turned 16 on October 17th. Over the years, she survived having all of her teeth removed, an emergency surgery to remove her uterus, a stray cat attack, mammary tumor removal, and vestibular disease. I think she held on for as long as she could because she knew I wasn’t ready to let her go.

Zoe baby, your moms and your sisters are gonna miss you so much. ❤️🐾 We love you Zoe baby.

It’s been a while since you’ve heard from us. We had a somewhat related but unrelated scare.

In June, Kristine had a routine mammogram. It turned out to be anything but routine. After more testing, she ended up having surgery to remove the suspicious tissue so they could do a more in-depth biopsy.

We were hopeful, but there was a 50% chance it would be bad news. What kind of luck would we have that Kristine would have all this chemo only to have breast cancer on top of it? That was just too much!

We got the biopsy results back on 9/28.
NO BREAST CANCER!!! 🎉 We’re incredibly grateful & relieved to have one less thing to worry about.

To prep for surgery, she had to stop the medication that starves tumors of blood supply 6 weeks ago. We now realize this medication was likely causing some of her major side effects. Since stopping it, she’s been feeling much better!

Since then, we’ve been spending more time enjoying life together & appreciating these moments even more. We’re soaking it up & not taking any of it for granted. ❤️

She’s feeling more like herself, having much less pain, and her hair is growing back thick & healthy. She’s still struggling with her appetite & continues to lose weight. We’re keeping an eye on it.

Even though the last few weeks have been pretty good, Tuesday night into Wednesday morning was HELL. 😩 She was up vomiting & was too sick to get Immunotherapy on Wednesday. Thankfully, she’s feeling much better. They rescheduled last week’s treatment to this Tuesday.

Her next PET scan is on Thursday. We’re hoping for good results! Please keep prayers & positive thoughts coming. We could really use some good news! 🙏🏽

Overall, she’s having more good days than bad. We feel like we’re moving in the right direction. This fight is far from over, but we’re so grateful for the better days, the extra quality time, & every bit of progress she’s made.

Thank you for continuing to love us, check on us, & keep Kristine in your thoughts & prayers. We feel that love more than you know. ❤️

Now let’s get some GOOD PET scan results!

No. This pic wasn’t taken today. You’ll get a new pic when we feel like it 🤭😉

A lotta update on Kristine

This photo was taken today during her immunotherapy treatment. We’re seeing signs that her body is starting to recover and is making a comeback. Her eyebrows and eyelashes are continuing to grow and we’re even seeing her little chemo fuzz turn into actual hair! 😊 Her hyperpigmentation is also slowly getting better.

At the same time, recovery has been a roller coaster. Some days are better than others, and she is still suffering from significant pain and fatigue. It’s hard sometimes seeing the physical signs of healing while also being reminded that her body is still recovering from everything it’s been put through.

Today she received a referral for palliative care. She has mixed emotions about it which is understandable. I’m happy that she will get help managing her pain, symptoms, and overall quality of life as she continues treatment and recovery. I think we’re both grateful that Kristine will have another layer of support and resources to help her feel as good and comfortable as possible so she can continue focusing on her fight.

Yesterday was my birthday AND our 11th wedding anniversary ❤️🎉. I’m happy that Kristine had a pretty good day. We were able to celebrate, enjoy the day, and just appreciate her having a better day together. I don’t take days like that for granted.

There are still hard days, but we are grateful for the good ones too. Thank you, as always, for keeping Kristine in your thoughts & prayers and sending positive energy.

🐾 International Dog Day has entered the chat! 🐾

We roll out the royal treatment for fur babies. Because hey… they already act like they run the place. 😂🐶

But International Dog Day is about more than spoiling our own babies. It’s a day to celebrate ALL dogs & shine a light on those waiting for their forever homes.🐕‍🦺❤️

We’re big believers in celebrating the things that bring more joy, love, & good energy. These two definitely make the list & remind us to take a break & enjoy the little things.

Happy #InternationalDogDay! by @angelsharice

It’s been a little over 4 weeks since Kristine’s last chemo infusion. We both know it didn’t mean that her fight was over, but we were hopeful that the next chapter would be a little easier. And whew… it has definitely been a rollercoaster. 😳

Last Wednesday, Kristine had her first post-chemo immunotherapy and Avastin infusion. I’m happy to share that she tolerated it well. We’re still taking things one day at a time and navigating all the ups and downs (and the more downs) that come with treatment, but it felt really good to have her treatment day go smoothly.

These past 4 weeks she’s had some hard days, some better days, a lot of uncertainty, and plenty of reminders to stay present and take things one day at a time. And we’re starting to see some little signs of her old self coming back. Her hair is starting to grow back in, and she’s officially got some chemo fuzz happening. Her eyelashes and eyebrows are also making a come back. That’s a win! We’ll take it.

She’s getting stronger, but it’s going to take some time to get closer to her normal. Her body has been through hell over the last 7 months. I think that’s one of the hardest parts right now. She’s (VERY SLOWLY 🫣) learning that just because chemo is over it doesn’t mean she’s going to feel like herself overnight. Sometimes she forgets she has stage 4 (incurable but treatable) cancer. We’re thankful that her medical team is treating her with curative intent, which means we’re trying to get her to a place where no cancer is detected.

I’m over here telling all her business, but I need her to give herself some grace and not expect too much too soon. Through all of this, Kristine continues to amaze me. I’m so proud of her and everything she’s already overcome.

We’re grateful for every “better” day, every prayer, text, call, check-in, and every person continuing to surround us with love. The fight isn’t over. Thank you for continuing to support us through this journey. ❤️

You want the good news or the bad news first? 🤔

The last 4 weeks have been a busy hot mess. We’ve had bad days with some worse days sprinkled in.
I won’t bore you with a week by week run down so here’s the summary.

🙁 We’ve had one urgent care visit. Diagnosis was UTI with 5 days of antibiotics. Come to find out not only was it a UTI, Kristine also has cystitis caused by the radiation and chemo meds. Insert another med in the mix.

Routine mammogram that resulted in not so routine results. 🙁 They spotted something unusual so they had a second diagnostic mammogram. Again not good results so they did a biopsy. The results came back last week and she has atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH) bordering on low-grade ductal carcinoma in situ with calcifications. She will have the mass surgically removed so we have a surgery consult on September 11th.

Ok. So now on to the good news. 😁
Kristine had an appointment with her Radiation oncologist yesterday and her oncologist this morning, and is sitting in what was supposed to be her 4th of 6 chemo cycles in this round of treatment.

She had a PET Scan on 7/17. We received the results this morning
Kristine doesn’t have to do her last two cycles. This will be her last chemo treatment!!! 🎉🎊

Her oncologist was really excited about the results. We’re really excited about the results!!!!

They think this last chemo treatment, plus her body still responding to radiation, and ongoing immunotherapy will be enough to eradicate the little active cancer that is still remaining. She will have another PET scan in 3 months.

These are the results we had hoped for. This is all good news. 🎉🎊

She’s going to continue on Keytruda (immunotherapy) and Avastin (to stop the formation of new blood vessels, starving tumors). Those infusions will continue every 3 weeks. She’s so happy she doesn’t have to continue chemo!

She did it ya’ll … for now. Keeping our fingers and toes crossed for good results in future PET Scans. 🤞🏾

Thank you to everyone who has supported us and poured love into us through this fight. 💕

13 years ago today, this beautiful soul came into my life and I’m forever grateful that she did. 🥰
Every day that I get to wake up next to her feels like a gift.

I honestly never thought love like this existed until I found her. She has always made me feel chosen, and loved, and cherished, and like I was the prize. But the truth is, I’m the real winner. Kristine really is one of the best people I’ve even met. She’s generous, she’s kind, she’s thoughtful, she cares, she’s sensitive, and she loves HARD! I feel so lucky.

With everything she’s going through right now, every day she still checks on me. Every morning she asks me how I slept last night. She makes sure that I’m eating and taking care of myself. Sometimes I feel her reaching over in the middle of the night to touch me, to make sure I’m still sleeping next to her. She’s not slick. I know what she’s doing. She’s checking to make sure that I haven’t gotten up too early and that I’m getting enough sleep. I don’t always tell her, but it’s those little things that show me how much she loves and cares.

This year has been the roughest. Even more now I’m hoping, and wishing, and willing the universe to give me 13 plus more years with her. She really is the love of my life.

Kristine, I love you for eternity. Happy anniversary my love. 😍

Last time you heard from us, Kristine was just about to go in for her second chemo infusion on 6/3. That day ended up being the longest we’ve had so far. We started with her first appointment at 8:30 a.m. and didn’t make it home until about 8:20 p.m. 😵
By the time we were leaving, the lights were off and the cleaning crew was already hard at work.

We’re currently sitting through Kristine’s 3rd infusion as I write this. I didn’t post an update this past week before chemo day because I’ve been busy, and honestly, I just wasn’t feeling up to it.

The past few weeks have been a mix of harder and better days, but she’s still pushing through. She’s amazing!!! Her neuropathy is getting worse, and she’s still dealing with pain, itching, and soreness from her hair follicles dying. Eyebrows and eyelashes are fleeing the building. 👁️👃🏽👁️
She’s also having some GI issues, which make it tough some days to even want to eat.

After her last conversation with her oncologist, she decided to reduce her Taxol dose by 20% for this week’s infusion. Her 4th infusion will also be pushed to 4 weeks instead of 3. That shift will take us to the week after her next PET scan which is on 7/17, so her oncologist can decide how to proceed with the 4th dose.

Picture was taken today during her infusion. I don’t know how, but she’s still smiling y’all.

I’m still here. Cancer is a c***. This Stage 4 cancer thing isn’t for the weak. This is by far the worst thing I’ve ever had to go through. I’m trying my hardest to stay focused and believe this is all temporary.

I’m ultra blessed to have my support system. Without my wife, who has been such an advocate for my care, I wouldn’t be alive right now. She makes me understand why I chose her and will keep choosing her until the day I die. I’ve never known a love like this. This struggle has taught me there is such a thing as a true soulmate. Angel - I love you for your mind, body, & especially your heart.

Thank you so much to all of you for the texts, DM’s, mealtrain donations, comments, & phone calls. Checking in on me makes this so much more tolerable. I go into every chemo treatment with a literal fighter’s mentality. I know I have all of you behind me, thinking about me, and wanting the best outcome for me. You all mean more to my mental state than you’ll ever know. Because of all of you, when I think I can’t do anymore, I can dig a little deeper knowing I need to report back some good news and you’re genuinely wanting what’s best for me. The fighting continues. ❤️🖤
