It has been three weeks since I presented Zonnesteek at the KABK Graduation Show.

I want to take this moment to thank everyone who came to visit, for all the kind words, and for the beautiful, sometimes deeply personal conversations we shared.

A special thank you to Andrea Stultiens, Annaleen Louwes, Daniëlle van Ark, and Raimond Wouda for your guidance.

And to all these wonderful people, thank you for your support. It was quite a journey and you helped this project grow into something I am really proud of. The process behind Zonnesteek

- I digest the memory -

Many memories I had subconsciously tucked away. To keep the grief bearable, I think. They seemed to have dissolved over time. But each time I developed a photograph by bringing it back into the light, more and more fragments of that memory resurfaced. The memories moved through my body with such detail and feeling that I felt a strong need to process them again. I had to let go. I unravelled all the printed pieces of fabric, thread by thread – I digest the memory. taken in Royal Academy of Art, The Hague by @annabelschipper

The process behind Zonnesteek

- I revisit the memory -

During the time my mother got terminally ill and after she passed away, I took many photographs during moments of connection and of saying goodbye. The sun had a quiet yet constant presence.

Three years later, I look those photographs for the first time. With the negatives of the photographs, a light‑sensitive emulsion and sunlight, I print the photographs onto pieces of fabric – I revisit the memory. The sun that once shone during those moments, now actively develops the photograph. The light makes her visible once more. taken in Royal Academy of Art, The Hague by @annabelschipper

Tomorrow is the opening of the KABK graduation show, where I will show my project Zonnesteek.

This little sun of 5 centimeters wide is the first try out for the project. Slowly it grew into a big by hand embroidered sun of 2 meters wide.

I will share more of the process in the coming days.

LanghammarsGubben Fårö, 2024

During my stay with very dear friends who own a beautiful house, Villa Boobar, on the Swedish island Gotland, they took me on a day trip to the adjacent island Fårö.  This is Langhammars Raukområde, a stunning beach filled with majestic limestone sea stacks. Some of these surrealistic sculptures are more than eight meters high. It felt like stepping onto a film set by Ingmar Bergman. taken in Langhammars, Fårö by @annabelschipper
