THE ARTISTS — PART 1

It’s time to introduce the first six artists taking part in SIGNAL ’26!

Bringing together different backgrounds, ideas and ways of making, these six artists each have their own story to tell. From the first steps of a new practice to ideas that are still taking shape, their work reflects the curiosity, experimentation and fresh perspectives of a new generation of creatives.

We’re excited to share their work with you and give you a first look at the artists behind it. This is just the beginning, more introductions are coming soon!

Somewhere between parliament and promenade, The Hague has acquired a reputation for being respectable rather than exciting. Yet the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) begs to differ.

Since moving to the city to attend the academy myself, I’ve started noticing how strongly KABK’s pulse runs through the city. From @mushroomradio playing at @laak.club and @studio202__ taking over @pipdenhaag, to regular openings at @paradise.thehague; student-led initiatives claim the city as its campus.

As the end of the year approached, I wanted to look closer at the voices emerging from within, and found that KABK’s influence rests on far more than heritage alone. Its pioneering spirit has made it one of the Netherlands’ most respected academic institutions, exemplified by being the first to sever ties with Israel following the siege of Gaza. That same urgency to take a stance, I’d soon find out, is reflected throughout this year’s graduation show as well.

After traversing, lingering, and revisiting, I talked with five graduates whose stories left me with strong impressions. Impressions that, going forward, might have you look at The Hague differently.
