After work today, I spent a little time volunteering at a local kindergarten, helping to build a Benjes hedge.

All the branches came from fruit trees I’ve been caring for throughout the week, giving the cuttings a second purpose while creating a little habitat for wildlife. by @arboristberlin

From total chaos to a clean, balanced and beautiful tree.

Fruit tree pruning can be a lot more work than it looks. Even on smaller trees, it can take hundreds of individual cuts and every single one plays a part in shaping the final result.

It’s always about finding the right balance: removing enough to create structure, light and airflow, without taking away too much.

What do you think of the result?
Would you have pruned less, or shortened it even more?

Wind, waves & a little surprise in Denmark

Spent some amazing days kitesurfing at Ringkøbing Fjord — chasing the wind, enjoying the water and making the most of Denmark.

And somewhere between the kite sessions, I came across this impressive little creature — most likely a Goat Moth caterpillar (Cossus cossus). It can grow to almost 10 cm long and spends several years as a caterpillar before turning into a large moth with a wingspan of up to 10 cm.

Definitely not what I expected to find on a kitesurfing trip!

Ignoring tree fungi isn’t the best idea. Not every fungus is equally dangerous to a tree, and not every fungus is easy to spot or identify. But it’s always worth taking a closer look at your trees—or asking someone with the right expertise before someone gets hurt unnecessarily.

In this case, miraculously, no one was injured, but it could have turned out very differently.

Take care of yourselves and preserve your trees for as long as possible.

The end of the season is getting closer… but there’s still a lot of work to do.

The caterpillars have now pupated, and the moths will soon emerge. Some trees are still carrying close to 200 nests, so we’re working hard to get them cleared in time.

To get the job done, we combine MEWPs and rope access, tackling every tree as efficiently and safely as possible.

These clips capture what our everyday work has looked like over the past two months. Long days, hard work, good spirits, lots of laughter, a great atmosphere and a lot of teamwork.

Yesterday, while felling a dead maple tree, I came across this incredible creature: the Leopard Moth (Zeuzera pyrina).

With its striking white wings covered in blue-black spots, it almost looks hand-painted. What makes it even more fascinating is its life cycle—the caterpillar spends up to two years tunneling through the wood of deciduous trees before finally emerging as this beautiful moth.

It’s a reminder that even a dead tree can still support an amazing diversity of life. Nature never ceases to surprise me.

Ropes are a huge part of my life.

Every single day, I trust one with my life. They’re among the most important tools I use as an arborist.

This one is something special. Not because of its beautiful colors, but because of its incredibly low stretch and impressive strength—at just 12 mm in diameter, it’s rated to around 70 kN.

It’s made from Dyneema®, a high-performance fiber that’s also used in many of the highlines I walk on during the weekends.

In tree work, this rope will become part of my rigging system, helping me lift and precisely lower heavy tree sections from difficult-to-reach places where cranes can’t access.

I can’t wait to put it to work… and, of course, have a little fun with it.

Not every caterpillar turns into a butterfly, and not every #caterpillar is an oak processionary moth.

We find this *Lymantria dispar* right in the middle of Berlin, with no oaks in the vicinity.

We collected the caterpillars as thoroughly as possible to make the event location usable again.

The different sizes and colors indicate the stage of development.

we find #OPM and #gypsymoth also in the sames trees, even in the same nest. But the gypsy moth is usually more widely distributed and does not form groups, they can also rappel down like Spider-Man. Lymantria dispar are also not quite as highly allergenic as OPN.

We'll see what else makes its way to us in Berlin next year. I heard that the eastern pine processionary have already been spotted 😵‍💫
Fortunately, we don't have that many pine trees and almost no monocultures around Berlin.......🐛

new toy in my toolbox

I also ordered new ropes and pulleys for it right away.
I'm really excited to play with it properly.

There will definitely be updates when it's put into use.
