This fall season in the PNW, the natural world is actively grieving: leaves are turning their colors waiting to depart from their branches, flocks of birds are leaving their homes to migrate south for warmth, all while the sun lays to rest earlier in the day, ushering in the cool and crisp Autumn air. As the natural world prepares for and endures its endings, it does not stop moving. Despite all the endings, the world around us remains active in its growth! Just like our ecosystems, we too grow amidst our grief. As we launch our End-of-Year Giving Campaign, A Resting Place invites us to reflect on the question: How have you grown in your grief? Comment below!🍂🌟🍄‍🟫
.
.
A Resting Place is ever growing and we need YOUR support to help us nurture our evolution! All donated funds go towards supporting our operations and on-going free/low cost programs like healing arts workshops, community memorials, and open hours. Every amount gifted is meaningful. Donate today and share with us how you’ve grown in your grief. Let’s grieve, grow, and heal together!🍂🌟🍄‍🟫 by @arestingplace.sea

A Resting Place and Monday Sundae invites you to join us for Undas programming on November 1st (All Saints Day) and November 2nd (All Souls’ day). In the Philippines, Undas is a time to remember dead friends, family, and ancestors through community connection, celebration, and culture. Join ARP and Monday Sundae in offering photos, sacred items, flowers, to our community altar/atang (food offering). Filipino snacks provided! ❤️🕯️🍂
.
.
Monday Sundae is the creative project from JM Lee, Seattle chef and creative; It’s goal is to celebrate and uplift the talents of friends around the city. This year’s Undas Altar is a follow up from last year’s collaboration with Pan De La Selva celebrating Dia de los Muertos. Monday Sundae’s altar is a container for grief, memory and communion. You are invited to bring items, not only represent loved ones passed, but as a container for grief, for separation and departure of all kinds. ❤️🕯️🍂
.
.
This Undas season, we share in the painful grief many of us carry in our hearts due to ongoing ICE abductions in our immigrant communities, active genocides in Palestine, Sudan, and Congo, and ongoing violence against Black and brown queer/trans communities around the globe. As we continue to hold all the losses together, may we also hold each other tighter in love and care. This Undas season, may the memory and wisdom of all our ancestors move us closer to liberation, closer to the world we are fighting for! ❤️🕯️🍂
.
.
Our continued Undas programming will also be available on Nov. 6th and 8th 12-4pm, and special evening of Ilokano prayer on Nov. 7th 4-7pm. Please keep a look out for our schedule for those days + the rest of November and December dates! ❤️🕯️🍂 by @arestingplace.sea

Derek Dizon built @arestingplace.sea for the community to grapple with loss 🥀

When terrible things happen, what kind of space do we create for them? It’s a question Derek Dizon has wrestled with for most of his life; when he was four years old, his mother was murdered.

Today, Phoebe Dizon is at the heart of her son’s work as founder of A Resting Place, a cultural resource center in the Chinatown–International District focused on Asian, Black, Brown, and queer/trans grief and loss. Her face beams out from the center of the community altar there, housed in a curio cabinet. In a family snapshot perched amid dried flowers, she wears a pin-striped blazer, her eyes sparkling.

Visitors have left photos, keepsakes, and handwritten notes remembering loved ones. Art, poems, and remembrances dot the walls. In the grief resource library toward the back, people can recline on mats and pillows to write letters to their departed. “In our society, we don’t have an everyday ritual or everyday space to really acknowledge
loss,” Dizon says.

I recently had the honor of photographing @arestingplace.sea the international district based grief and loss cultural resource center and their founder, Derek Dizon, for @seattlemet

Upon arrival I almost immediately saw a candle for the late cultural pillar of this city, Rahwa Habte - and I was brought to tears in seconds.

Derek handed me a cup of water, and showed me first hand why a place meant for mourning and remembrance is quintessential - I’m happy this space exists for us as a city.

Thanks for the assignment @seejane_ thanks for your dedication to community @arestingplace.sea and thank you for your time Rahwa. 🕊️ by @arestingplace.sea
