What a bangin’ night. Honored, humbled, all of it but I feel especially lucky to have a stage and microphone to share my story-which also happens to be the story of millions of us in the restaurant space. I’ll say it again—restaurants are home to the best of humanity—and I feel so outrageously lucky to have found a career that values and rewards kindness, generosity, and love. Values to me, that also define the best of what it means to be an American. I owe so much to so many people who helped me along the way. Well. Here it is. A secret I’ve held for nearly twenty five years. Feels so liberating to share it with the world. It felt like the right time to share my journey as an undocumented immigrant now, as a reminder that we are your friends, your neighbors, your loved ones, and yes—your sommeliers. Grateful to be a citizen and have my unrequited love for this country finally returned. Love this country. Love this city. Love you all—thank you to all the guardian angels who knew my secret and supported me along the way. You know who you are. Couldn’t imagine trusting anyone else with this story.
