Last week we finished a 9 day workshop firing of our anagama kiln jointly lead by @harrison_lev and @asartoriusceramics for a great group from @gasworksnyc . There was dancing, hard work, big stokes, and plenty of yummy kiln side treats. The kiln is cooling this week as we all wait patiently. Cleaning up and packing pots today and tomorrow to start the journey to @jeffshapiro62 ‘s studio to set up for @hudsonvalleypotterytour this weekend. I’m so thrilled to be returning to the site of my apprenticeship, to spend time with Jeff and Hinako, and to have the opportunity to share my pots along with all the other incredible makers on the tour this year! Spending a rainy afternoon cleaning up pots for @hudsonvalleypotterytour next weekend on the 17th and 18th of October. So excited to share lots of new functional sculptures like this drippy twice fired sculptural yunomi. I can’t wait to see what new work my host, @jeffshapiro62 , has from his recent anagama firing, and what all the other tour hosts and guests have to share. Hopefully we get a weekend more like yesterday’s perfect fall sun, and less like today’s all day rain! Andrew Sartorius grew up in the rolling red clay hills of Parkersburg, West Virginia. He graduated from the College of Wooster in Ohio with a BA in English literature and fictional writing. Andrew moved to the southern coast of Shikoku, Japan as a high school English teacher in Kochi prefecture. While in Japan, Andrew traveled to many historic ceramic centers and taught himself how to throw on a potter's wheel while immersing himself in the history of Japanese ceramics. He returned to America after four years of living in Japan to apprentice with the internationally recognized wood fire ceramic artist, Jeff Shapiro.

Unloading the last soda kiln before @hudsonvalleypotterytour later this afternoon. Looks quite nice with a lot of warm fall colors and juicy soda surfaces. That last picture shows onenof the most dramatic tumbles of a tumble stack I think I’ve seen in a while. We’ll see if they all can be cleaned up🤔🤪. This little sculptural sipper is fresh out of the anagama @theokidokistudio after opening up @scottrossstudio ‘s recent workshop firing. It was a great firing with so many bright colors and ash drips in abundance. This little guy is already on his way to a new home, but so many more like him are getting cleaned up for the quickly approaching @hudsonvalleypotterytour. This October 17 and 18th I’ll be the guest artist @jeffshapiro62 ‘s studio. Last round of making before @hudsonvalleypotterytour is coming to a close. Had pots out in my truck bed soaking up some sun so I could load a bisque last night. These are heading for a soda firing this weekend. I always try to bring a mix of my sculptural explorations and the pots and shapes that pulled me into my journey. Sometimes it just feels good to make mugs that feel good in my hands and bowls I would like to share food from. There are so many great artists on this year’s tour. In the last run of making for @hudsonvalleypotterytour . Mugs, serving bowls, sippers, and espresso cups are all in the working flow. This always one of the busiest times of year. Firings @theokidokistudio are starting to slow down a bit as we approach the end of our 2026 firing season. Curriculum planning for 2027 has already begun, and my making cycle for the holiday season begins to ramp up. @hudsonvalleypotterytour is always the best chance to get the full spectrum of my newest sculptural and functional pots. I’m pretty excited for what I have in the works to bring this year. The garden is (and has been) in full swing. Plums for pickling, tomatoes for sauce and canning, black eyed peas for drying, the things we can’t can or freeze get dehydrated for later, and the flowers nurture our hearts. There’s a lot of work to living in between all the pottery and firing here. Do y’all put food by? I grew up watching @nsartorius can every season from our small garden and apple trees. I always loved it. This year’s big project is finding a recipe for water melon rind pickles that we like.
