Playing around with eyes and patterns, inspired by evil eye symbolism 🧿 I remember growing up and giving my grandparents news about good grades at school or other random things, and to ward off evil eye they would say MashAllah before grabbing my head and spraying a mist of spit over my forehead three times (tu tu tu). Man I’d make SUCH a big deal of wiping their “protection” away but what I would GIVE now for the very same (ok maybe pre-covid, pre-covid)! And just when I thought we were the only weirdos that had to endure this practice I learned later in life it was common in Jewish and Greek tradition as well 🙃 Keen to learn more and hopefully revisit this theme properly sometime 🧿

Our Sketch & Stroll workshop series at Kew Gardens came to a close last weekend with the final Autumn edition and lucky us, it didn’t rain once!

In total we hosted 46 people over three sessions, saw many familiar faces and made connections with some new people as well 💚

Thank you to everyone who joined us to slow down and spend some creative time in nature together and to paraphrase one of our guests: give the flowers and leaves the attention they deserve.

Special shout to our life drawing models who were excellent sports, as well as our facilitators @asmaeatsart @sarahejionye @salmathepainter who also happened to model at one point or another.

Thank you all for helping us making it a success. Until the next time loves 🌱 taken in Kew Gardens by @asmaeatsart

What a lovely time it was hosting our Sketch & Stroll @kewgardens yesterday! It was so wonderful to see so many familiar faces plus some new ones too. We hope everyone enjoyed the session as much as we did 🌺

A huge thank you and welcome to @kiera.grace who is officially part of the delivery gang now! We couldn’t be more excited to have her with us 🌺

Spend an afternoon wandering and drawing through one of our favourite botanical spots in London. This guided experience will combine a relaxed walk through Kew Gardens with two creative exercises; the first will be focused on still life and the second on life drawing.

This event will be facilitated with one of our newest members; the lovely @kiera.grace - heyyy Kiera! 🌺

What you will get out of the workshop:
Light guidance on composition and observational technique, plus tips on gesture and using different materials for mark making. And as you’ll be spending the day with other Global Majority women and non-binary people you are very likely to share a laugh, swap ideas and have a good time connecting with likeminded souls.

What’s included:
- All creative materials
- Free entry to the gardens

Good to know:
- Max group size is 20
- No drawing experience is required
- You do not have to buy a ticket to enter Kew Gardens, entry is included in this workshop
- You can stay in the gardens and continue exploring once the workshop is over
- If temperatures exceed 33°C or heavy rain is forecast, the event may be postponed. We’ll give as much notice as possible if that is the case.

Accessibility:
The Gardens are largely flat with tarmac paths

Don’t forget:
Bring a water bottle, hat, sunscreen and wear comfortable shoes.

I recently completed a Creative Health Residency which wrapped up a couple months ago and wanted to share how it went.

All the love and appreciation to Jemilea & Arji who facilitated our learning programme, Carol our rock who steered us through clinical supervision, my placement host Grace @artsstgeorges for welcoming and looking after me and of course my fellow resident artists who injected so much beautiful energy into the group sessions and meet ups. What an experience ❤️ by @asmaeatsart

It’s Creativity & Wellbeing Week and I partnered with @londonartsandhealth to lead the evaluation for their opening event at the National Theatre: What does Critical Hope feel like?

I designed a living installation that let me bring collage into research and with five prompts, 200+ hand-cut shapes and one wooden tree we slowly compiled the network’s reflections across the afternoon. By the end, it was a piece of data and an artwork in one.

Huge congratulations to @reimashakeir on the publication of Arab American Women: Identity and Intersectionality.

It was an honour to design the cover for this one and working with someone who champions creativity and truly values the collaborative process and supporting artists made this project SUCH a joy. So excited to see it out in the world with @bloomsburypublishing ❤️ by @asmaeatsart

I am making space for new work and ideas and letting go of some older pieces (turns out this process is just as much physical as it is mental!) so if you ever thought you would like to purchase some of my work - now is the time!

All pieces are original handcut collages (ie not prints or reproductions), small in size (no larger than A3) and are starting from £20. I am open to reasonable offers and can also provide framing options for most of the pieces.
