If you're nodding along to any of these, this one's for you. 💛

We made this because disabled artists deserve better, and because the sector is full of people who genuinely care - but that care keeps getting taken advantage of, again and again.

Swipe for the phrases it's time to let go of.

The Anti-Exploitation Academy is a free, on-demand course helping organisations ditch harmful practices and actually work fairer.

We're doing this work ourselves too.

Image descriptions: A series of digital collages with text overlayed.

1. Text reads: Phrases that are normalised in the arts sector'.

2. Text reads: "It's great exposure!" 86% of disabled creatives have been asked to work for free. Exposure won't pay their rent.

3. Text reads: "We're a small org, with no budget" If a project can't pay people, it can't afford to run. Simple.

4. Text reads: "But you LOVE what you do!" Love for the work is often weaponised to justify not paying artists. Passion doesn't cover bills.

5. Text reads: "It's just a few hours" Unpaid hours add up to systemic exploitation, especially for disabled artists who face this the most.

6. Text reads: Done with BS? Same. The Anti-Exploitation Academy is a free, on-demand course built to help organisations ditch harmful practices and work fairer. And yes, we're doing this work too.

A DIY GUIDE FOR ARTISTS WORKING IN CREATIVE HEALTH 🎨

I was so grateful to have been selected as an artist for the Culturally Mindful residency and training programme earlier this year.

“Culturally Mindful brings together Global Majority artists, healthcare providers, and grassroots organisations to co-design new approaches to health and wellbeing support.

Born out of a recognised need to address stark racial and cultural inequalities in health access and outcomes, this project is a bold step toward more inclusive, representative, and community-rooted creative health practice.” The programme is part of Wandsworth Borough of Culture programme @welcometowandsworth

I’ve put together a brief DIY guide to project design, delivery, and creative evaluation using the information, case studies, best practices, wisdom and resources shared at the Culturally Mindful training sessions. I’ve also included some of my own reflections and ideas. At the bottom of this guide, you will find a list detailing the incredible trainers/ facilitators/ founders, along with a range of useful resources. Link in bio!

It’s been so amazing to find community/ connect with other socially engaged artists + hope to continue to share my learnings over the next six months of the programme.

Culturally Mindful was designed and curated by Jemilea Wisdom-Baako (community leader, artist, cultural educator and founder).
