The United States is moving through a defining moment of transition. As Americans work harder than ever to navigate economic uncertainty, digital misinformation, and the rapid shift toward cloud-based living, entire chapters of our collective memory are disappearing.

Lo-fi—long celebrated for its calming, reflective energy—has become a cultural language for remembering what we’ve lost and reimagining what’s possible.

Overstand is a multimedia fine arts series born during the pandemic that blends archival research, documentary filmmaking, and lo-fi soundscapes to make American history and philosophy more accessible.

Join me on Saturday, October 3 for Aesthetic Inheritance: Art, Archive, and African American Life, a dynamic symposium bringing together scholars, artists, and cultural workers to explore African American art, archives, memory, and historical documentation. I will be presenting on Overstand’s (@ovr.stand) “Lofi Might Save America” tape.

The symposium will begin with an opening plenary at the Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum (@bannekerdouglasstubmanmuseum) on October 1, followed by two days of programming at Bowie State University (@bowiestateuniversity) on October 2 and 3.
