After nearly a decade, we have decided to close The Atrium.

Back in early 2017, after only a year and half of living in New York, we opened our first little photo studio. We wanted a space that we could afford to create in as young photographers just starting out, and when we couldn’t find that - we decided to make it ourselves.

We were passionate about creating community and renting the space to our peers so they too could have a place they could afford and felt proud to bring a client to. What we got in return was so much more than just a studio. We got a creative home that for years raised us up in so many ways. We got to see the incredible impact on our own careers and that of our peers. We got the experience of building a business from the ground up. And we got to do all of it together, as best friends.

Now, it’s time to close the chapter on the space itself. We’re redirecting the energy that went into running a rental studio back into our own work, our own projects, and our own lives.

The Atrium was never just about the walls. It was about what happened inside them, and what we built together. So even though the studio is closed, we’re still here. Still shooting. Still building. Still best friends.

From the friends who helped us paint our first 600 sqft space off the Morgan L, to every single person who ever walked through the doors of our 2,500 sqft space in Ridgewood — we thank you deeply. It took a village and we thank you for being part of ours. 🤍 by @atarah

A moment from the process...

As I make progress in my latest series, I'm reminding myself to slow down and enjoy the beauty in each step along the way.

It's easy for me to get lost in the to-do lists or the done-what's-next mindset, but it's moments like this that pull me into the present and ground me.

Seeing my collection of vintage and antique frames waiting to be filled like blank canvases is overwhelming in the best way.

WEATHERED - by Atarah Atkinson, 2025

Walking through Rome, you learn quickly that the most extraordinary things are rarely the ones announcing themselves. This staircase I came across on foot — what appeared to be the back entrance to a private estate — was not asking to be looked at. Three marble steps lead to a large patiniad iron gate, and beyond it, more stairs continue upward past walls of old plaster that has begun to peel back, revealing the layers of material and time beneath. Dried leaves had gathered and cascaded around the steps, unhurried, as though they belonged there. I stood there bearing witness because it felt like accidentally seeing something true about a place; so I took a deep breath, settled my Hasselblad and found the frame — one snap later I continued on my way.
 Weathered sits with the idea that deterioration and improvement are not opposites. What aging takes away in precision it returns in depth — in the plaster that peels to reveal what it was made of, in the gate that has darkened over decades into something richer than its original finish, in the leaves that have settled into the composition as naturally as if they were placed. The archival giclée print is held in a vintage wood frame with gold accents, aged itself, holding an image that asks us to reconsider what we mean when we call something ruined.
 This piece is part of Bright Ruin (2025), my series of over 45 unique works shot entirely on analog film over the course of 10 days in Rome, and first exhibited at Gallery ATARAH in September 2025.

Draped Haze, 2026

In my practice, when I acquire a frame, sometimes the image meant to fill it will come to mind fairly quickly. When I saw this vintage frame, a shot I captured of the lovely @kitty_hayes many years ago flashed before my eyes. They belonged together and who was I to keep them apart? 
After every step of creation this piece felt more and more alive — in the end, all the elements came together just as I had envisioned. A sweep of red silk-cotton hovers like a veil of soft shadows, inviting us in, while the drama of the ornate carved wood reflects the delicate nature of this hazed moment of fragmentation — everything breathing beautifully in tandem.

Looking at her now I feel at ease, resolved, the feeling of calm completeness flows through me the only way it can when the universe is as it should be. I imagine her living somewhere the light shifts throughout the day, so the shadows can deepen and soften on their own schedule. A space where she will be the anchor in the room — offering a quiet grandeur while holding a delicate suspended feeling of confidence.
