There is nothing more satisfying than making bias binding with @libertyfabrics and using a bias tape maker makes it even more enjoyable😁

20 avocado seeds and only 13 buttons…

You may think this was a waste of time but it was really fun to make!

I have been collecting avocado seeds this summer with the idea of making buttons… and decided to wait until I had enough to do them all in one go but I should have cut the seeds fresh straight away cause most of them turned black so I ended up with just a handful of usable « slices ».

So here was my process:

1- cut the seeds into slices
2- cut the button shape roughly
3- make the holes
4- dry the pieces for two weeks
5- sand the pieces to desired shape
6- To varnish or not… I’m still debating 🤔
7- keep the wasted bits and pieces for future dye ( if you haven’t tried plant dye before I strongly suggest you do. Avocado give you the most beautiful peachy/pink colour.
8- keep the dust from sanding and mix it with either oil or water to make paint 🎨 !!!

I also have to decide what to use them for…

Any suggestions ?
Should I varnish them?

I tested the $25 mini sewing machine from Aldi 👀🧵

One of my lovely students kindly lent me hers so I could give it a proper try and share my honest feedback.

For $25, it might seem like a great little machine to have at home, but I wouldn’t recommend it as a first sewing machine, especially for children.

It’s quite difficult to thread, it sews surprisingly fast, and most importantly, I don’t think it’s a safe choice for little hands.

Because of its small size and low price, it’s easy to assume it’s designed for kids, but this is not a toy or a children’s sewing machine.

If your child is learning to sew, I’d much rather see them learning on a proper sewing machine that is easy to control, easy to thread and has the right safety features.
