I tested the $25 mini sewing machine from Aldi 👀🧵

One of my lovely students kindly lent me hers so I could give it a proper try and share my honest feedback.

For $25, it might seem like a great little machine to have at home, but I wouldn’t recommend it as a first sewing machine, especially for children.

It’s quite difficult to thread, it sews surprisingly fast, and most importantly, I don’t think it’s a safe choice for little hands.

Because of its small size and low price, it’s easy to assume it’s designed for kids, but this is not a toy or a children’s sewing machine.

If your child is learning to sew, I’d much rather see them learning on a proper sewing machine that is easy to control, easy to thread and has the right safety features.

🧵 THREADING CHALLENGE! 🏁

After finding out that Max Alexander holds the Guinness World Record for threading a sewing machine in just 10 seconds, obviously we had to put the Little Stitch Academy team to the test 😂

So… who came closest? 👀⏱️

Here’s how it went…

Another winner #marlomimito ! 💚

A fantastic beginner-friendly pattern: no fuss, easy to sew, and the kind of pants you’ll reach for again and again.

And honestly… who doesn’t want a pair of green corduroy pants?! I grabbed this fabric from Spotlight (surprise, surprise 😅) thinking I’d make something for Mr D. I offered it to him, but he had his heart set on a pair of oversized ’90s cargo pants… so I politely declined 😂 and made these Marlo pants for myself instead.

He’s a little jealous now. 🤭

These are still a size 20, but they feel a touch roomier than I remembered… maybe those hip measurements are finally shrinking. About time! 🙌

I also learned something new while sewing: corduroy needs to be cut and sewn with the nap running in the same direction, otherwise the fabric can end up with little “bruises.” Thankfully, this pattern is finished almost entirely with French seams, so any little bruises were neatly hidden.

No pattern modifications this time, except for adding a hem band to give them a little extra length.

Now excuse me while I wear these green beauties far more often than is socially acceptable. 💚🌿

Current plan for class transitions: install a cuckoo clock and hope for the best 😂

The kids never want to stop sewing, never want to pack up, and definitely never want to go home. Maybe a cheerful little cuckoo! is exactly what we need to signal that class is over… even if they’d happily stay here all night. 🧵
