I’ve been thinking about how hard it is to get honest with God. Maybe it’s because we don’t fully grasp our inner worlds, especially in grief. Or perhaps because we learned an anemic theology of suffering — a Christian “toxic positivity” that tells us to ignore everything we feel, slap an ill-timed Bible verse over our pain, and don’t ask any questions.

It’s hard to imagine that any relationship, especially our most important one with God, can grow when there isn’t a real level of honesty.

I’ve been through a long season of grief myself, what St. John of the Cross calls, “a dark night of the soul.” Though this is not a club I willingly signed up for, I have found God here, in the darkness. I have found hope here, in the pain. God has met me here, in my honest questions and laments.

Lament is not grief itself but the expression of grief. Lament is God’s invitation to us, to draw near with all of our sorrow, anger, and doubt—with the raw, full spectrum of our emotional questions—and lay them out before Jesus.

While lament doesn’t always guarantee a satisfying answer on the other side of our honesty, this ancient biblical practice does offer us a pathway through our valleys of hurt.

So, what questions should you be asking when the heartbreak of life leaves you wondering if God is even there to answer?

Our spiritual questions are good. Uncertainty and mystery actually help us know God's presence in our pain. Sometimes? It’s simply a matter of knowing what to do with our questions. Don’t ignore them or hide them from God. Ask away.

Psalm 40 opens in a pit — David is in mud up to his knees, standing on ground that gives way every time he pushes against it. And David doesn’t climb out. He waits. And waits. Waiting on top of waiting.

If that’s you right now - have faith. The Lord may not operate on your time frame (He never does on mine), but He will not delay. Your breakthrough is coming. And His presence is already sustaining you.

In 1978, two psychologists named it “the impostor phenomenon.”

A phenomenon is a thing that happens.

But somewhere along the way it became a syndrome.

And a syndrome isn’t a thing that happens –It’s a thing you have.

But we aren’t alone.

Moses says he can’t speak. Gideon says he’s the least in his family. Jeremiah says he’s too young.

And God never once disputes it. God never gives them a pep talk.

God says simply: I AM with you.

Basically, God declines to argue about whether you’re enough. Rather, God equips you for what he’s called you to do.

So you can assume the One who wants you in the room put you there - and he’s not sending you in alone.

Let’s talk sponges.
A few years ago, my husband, Kevin, started buying these really good sponges, Scrub Daddy and Scrub Mommy. (Thank you, Shark Tank!) Sponges—even good ones—weren’t designed to hold water forever. A sponge that’s never wrung out becomes heavy. It smells funky. It loses its purpose. It can’t absorb anything new.

It’s not a perfect metaphor, but perhaps you find yourself holding the weight of something that was never yours to carry. No one asked if you had the strength to hold it. You never even thought to ask yourself.
