Oprah Winfrey: The Book Club Pioneer @oprahsbookclub

If you were ever immersed within the world of books, it's almost certain that Oprah's Book Club had some measure of impact on your life or career, whether directly or indirectly.

Launched in 1996, Oprah and her producer sought to share their personal love for reading, a movement that quickly expanded into private homes, libraries, and bookstores around the world. Their decision would become the largest book club in existence and would go on to sell millions of copies for the authors featured.

Today, while one could argue that virtual book clubs, like those on BookTok, offer greater accessibility, the tradition of gathering over a shared love of books remains strong, and we owe a great debt of gratitude to Oprah for planting that seed.

“Forever” on Netflix had me giddy from the start. A re-imagined take on Judy Blume’s story, told through the dual pov of two teens coming of age—it's raw, intentional, and emotional in all the ways that matter.

As a parent, it hit different. It’s rare to see a young male character portrayed with such tenderness and honesty. I immediately thought of Jason Reynolds’ Twenty-Four Seconds From Now—and I’m only one episode in!

Huge love to Mara for bringing her childhood dream to life, and to my friend Barry (Shabaka), whose character delivered one of my favorite lines:

"You can't wait for Howard for things to get better—you have to find your Howard NOW."

I hope you all will tune in and support such an groundbreaking project. x

I feel full and bonita.

Growing up, I know so many of us imagined what it meant to belong somewhere. At times, for me, that meant pretending to be a “girlfriend.” Last night felt like the perfect opportunity for the younger me to have a little fun. How did I do?

Ms. Amber is radiant in every way. Standing next to someone this beautiful and still choosing to post it takes a different kind of courage, one I’m learning to lean into.

Danessa…I know you are tired of me because all I do is gush. Your makeup. Your artistry. Your intentionality. You are so lovely.

Sam is a whole vibe. Do you see his fit?

And Scott is a walking bubble of warm, magnetic sunshine.

I’m learning that yes, my fullness comes from being in the moment with amazing people but it can also manifest when I choose to make room for the woman I will become.
