It was an absolute pleasure to spend a week at the @fineartsworkcenter in Provincetown learning the art of block printing from the incredibly talented @cecifonik.

I spent every day in the studio, biked to the ocean daily for a dip in mother ocean, connected with new friends, and had the beautiful opportunity to use my hands for something new.

In block printing, the residue of one’s exertion can appear, along with the intended image, when inked on the page. The tiny fissures, slashes, and radiating lines reflect the hand of the carver, becoming a unique signature of the artist themself.

Cecilia encouraged us not to remove all traces of striving, but to allow time spent drawing, erasing, carving, and refining to have a voice.

Her approach reminded me that perfection is a myth. Art isn’t a product, but an echo of intention, of energy, of strain, of labor. Like life, art is imperfect, and should be.

BOOK LAUNCH RECAP 🚀

You know that feeling when something is so good, so joyful, so aligned, so powerful, so affirming that it resonates in every cell of your body so you don’t post about it for a for a week for fear of getting it even the tiniest bit wrong 🙋🏻🙈🤯😹☺️😭😝🥰!? I may never find right the words for the sacredness I experienced, but here is an attempt —

Last Friday evening, I had the absolute honor of joining @kahyangni and our editor @kate_a_farrell for our launch of #notheorsheimme at @booksofwonder 💫

This experience was like a big hug from the universe - a reminder that I sorely needed - yes there will be loss, and change, AND YES there will be more sweetness than you think your heart can bear.

Ooooh the euphoria of seeing our book on the shelves, of meeting Kah and Kate in person for the first time after working together for three years on this project.

Thank you barely begins to cover the gratitude I feel to Kah for bringing their quiet brilliance to this book and to the launch. I am your biggest fan and I truly can’t wait to witness all the beauty and hope you continue to bring into this world.

Thank you falls short when I think of Kate’s ability to see this story and how she midwifed this idea into a book. I feel gratitude beyond measure for this chance to work with someone who feels as deeply as the sea. Who cares. Who shows up. Who uplifts, celebrates, and claps the loudest at exactly the right times.

Thank you to my chosen family, coworkers, friends, to the person I met canoeing on the east river just that once, to my original critique group by whom most of the videos and pictures were taken, to my family of origin who heroically traveled from from another state, to my friends who drove from other cities, to all of you who braved the rain, to my pals who kept catching my eyes and smiling, to the entire staff @booksofwonder and to the family in the front row whom I’d never met - from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Thank you for the beauty of your questions, for the ways you listened, and allowed yourselves to feel, and for the incredible celebration we had 🥹💫

I AM WHAT I AM 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

I was overjoyed to hear Not He or She, I’m Me read by the insanely talented Harmonica Sunbeam during #dragstoryhournyc at the Constantine Georgiou Library at NYU Steinhardt this afternoon.

We talked about the importance of non-binary representation, how essential it is to provide options for kids as they discover themselves…and we DANCED :)

I haven’t always had the language to describe myself, which is why I wrote this book. Words are the keys we need to open the doorways of self discovery. They spark curiosity, empower us, and help us feel seen.

This pride month, find *your* words and SHOUT IT LOUD 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈❤️

There is so much sexist, homophobic, transphobic and racist legislation underway. I began to feel helpless in the face of it all...

and then I got a package from a group of 1st through 4th graders I recently had the privilege of visiting full of drawings, cards, and funny little notes, and I remember that we all have a part to play. We all have a voice we can use. We all have gifts we can share.

I wrote my forthcoming book, Not He or She, I’m Me because I’m non-binary and use they/them pronouns, but I didn’t always.

When I was growing up, even though I knew I didn’t feel completely like a girl or completely like a boy, I didn't have the words to tell my parents or siblings.

Instead, I felt ashamed and “wrong” and spent decades of my life alternating between denying these feelings and trying to “fix” them.

I was much, much older (in my thirties!) when I learned the word nonbinary and what it meant. At first it scared and challenged me, but deep down, I knew that this word fit me.

I wrote this book because words are important. Visibility is important. Saying gay and non-binary and trans and recognizing these identities as valid, beautiful, and necessary is vitality important.
Access to books that celebrate these identities is vitally important.

I want to give kids as many words to describe themselves as possible. I want to give kids an endless kaleidoscope of possible futures. I want them to know that like ice cream, there is a whole rainbow of words available to claim.

So, thank you @henryholtbooks for choosing books that create, rather than erase, futures for our children.

Thank you to the teachers at @downtownmontessori for the work you are doing to celebrate all identities and for inviting me to share this book.

Thank you to the kids behind each and every one of these drawings for reminding me that our voices matter.

Love will prevail.
