It’s a surreal moment to have @theballetsalon at the top of the Arts section of the @nytimes . Thank you to Sophie for seeing the story in us and bringing it to life. And of course @stevenmolinacontreras for coming in on a rainy day to capture the magic, love, and beauty of our dancers in rehearsal. HUGE thank you to everyone who’s donated, asked questions, showed interest, showed up, and danced with us this season. And DUH thank you to @meiying_thai for saying, “it’s already happening” when I said, “so what if we started a ballet company” ❤️

I mostly feel lucky to have dance. I can’t get out of my mind the observation that ballet is primarily an oral tradition. My mom always wanted to do ballet but only one girl in her neighborhood could afford it, so she’d teach my mom some things on the street after class. I didn’t grow up with money and the fact I got to train at all was luck. I got to experience affordable, expanding, and joyous training at @lawrenceartscenter amongst dancers/teachers I still hold dear. Many of them were dedicated to creating new spaces and opportunities for dance. It wasn’t until I left that space that I realized just how lucky I was. In many ways they were the blueprint for TBS through their words & actions.

Finally back on Earth after @theballetsalon ’s Studio Showing: An Afternoon of Work-in-Progress. Thank you to everyone who came!

@meiying_thai and I have been moving forward one step at a time, but Sunday was a moment to pause and truly take it in. In a room full of friends, family, and support, I couldn’t help but be mesmerized by the group of women who were about to perform after so many years. So much passion, work, and dedication led us to this moment—not just over the past few months, but even decades ago. I’m not sure what they look like walking around the world but it’s pretty special that I get to see them lit up while doing the thing they love. Thank you to @emilycardea & @oloveya16 for helping us continue to grow in our love of dance.

We showed excerpts from the incredible ballets choreographers @jurionuki, @tiff__em, and @creativelifenyc created with us this summer through the Choreography Incubator. We also showed a taste of what dance rehearsals are like which usually remains hidden away but I think is sooo magical. This was our first moment sharing that sparkle of our community and collaborators with the world & I couldn’t be more proud ❤️

Second to last pic was our company warm up class before the showing followed by a video from our FIRST EVER COMPANY CLASS in March…who woulda imagined.

Some special moments snapped by our dancers, friends and family from our first ever studio showing today where we presented work-in-progress from TBS’ Choreography Incubator!!! It was SO incredible to be back in front of an audience again and to share what we’ve been working on the past three months in the studio with our AMAZING choreographers @jurionuki @tiff__em @creativelifenyc . THANK YOU for creating with us, and for sharing your process with our community today!!!! 🩰We are in AWE and SO proud of our gorgeous and hardworking dancers who poured their hearts and souls into the creative process to bring these works to life over the past 3 months and we’re so grateful to our artistic team @corystieg for beautifully moderating today’s conversations, @oloveya16 for nurturing these 3 ballets in the rehearsal process, and the one and only @emilycardea whose inspiring training has helped us all grow so much ♥️♥️♥️ taken in Mark Morris Dance Center by @awww_dri

Some projects got to the finish line recently 💫

The dream team @hudson_link put together a PSA for higher education in prison during an accelerator program with @f.y.eye and @havas over the past couple months. The PSA got funded and placed on NYC yellow cabs (along with some other placements) which was so cool to see!

And working with @blis_collective reminded me that i ❤️animating! This is one of a collection of gifs made for them.

Anyway this is a reminder that I make stuff when I’m not doing ballet. by @awww_dri

❤️ THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE DONATED❤️

A month ago we had our second Open House for dancers to come learn what we’re building with @theballetsalon. We also filmed our amazing fundraiser video by @aliceplati, where I found out I have no future as an actress. Luckily she really did me a solid with how well she edited it lol 🫶.

But all that was followed by some of the most amazing stories from dancers as they poured their hearts out into our applications. Sometimes it feels like we’re alone in our silent yearning, training, and memories but reading those apps were like reading love poems.

AHHH what a whirlwind.

For people who’ve known me forever, you know that ballet/dance was my first love. It gave me so much growing up, picked me up from the trenches in college when I was the first RISD student to dance with @fusiondancecobrown, grounded me in Bolivia, and now is giving me passion all over again.

@meiying_thai and I cofounded @theballetsalon which has been met with so much love and excitement. Today we sent our first official newsletter that made me realize how much we’ve done these past couple months.

❤️created a network of dancers, choreographers, and artistic collaborators
❤️hosted an open house
❤️second open house in the books
❤️got fiscally sponsored by The Field!!!!
❤️opened applications for Season I.
