“But as they moved around the studio, unfolding their limbs with practice and grace, it was obvious that ballet lives in each of their bodies.”

We are overwhelmed by the incredible response to Sophie Bress’ @sophie.jeanette beautiful story about us in @nytimes !!! Sharing some more of @stevenmolinacontreras magical photos from one of our rehearsals 🩰 Link in our bio to read the article!

“Almost every former ballet dancer has a story — often painful — about why they quit,” writes Sophie Bress about @theballetsalon for the @nytimes. “In an art form notorious for rigor and exacting standards — and, often, unhealthy attitudes toward bodies — it’s common for dancers to leave ballet feeling rejected.”¹

From my afternoon photographing and filming the company for @nytimes. Story by Sophie Bress. Photo editing by Maridelis Morales Rosado.

Former pre-professional dancers Meiying Thai and Adriana Gramly co-founded @theballetsalon to give dancers a place to return to ballet and perform without pursuing a professional career.

This video is a short excerpt from one of the pieces, featuring one of the company members, Amanda Li.

"While rehearsing “Deux Amours,” a new work by Tiffany Mangulabnan, the dancers talked about careers, motherhood, cultural identities and their decisions to leave ballet. “I knew we had parallel stories,” dancer Alexandra Glass told Bress, “and parallel traumas and parallel things to heal.” - Sophie Bress for the NYT.

Excited to share my latest project for the @nytimes

I spent an afternoon photographing and filming dancers from @theballetsalon, a semi-professional dance company co-founded by @meiying_thai and @awww_dri, created for dancers returning to ballet.

The story was written by Sophie Bress & photo edited by @_maridelis.

Some special moments snapped by our dancers, friends and family from our first ever studio showing today where we presented work-in-progress from TBS’ Choreography Incubator!!! It was SO incredible to be back in front of an audience again and to share what we’ve been working on the past three months in the studio with our AMAZING choreographers @jurionuki @tiff__em @creativelifenyc . THANK YOU for creating with us, and for sharing your process with our community today!!!! 🩰We are in AWE and SO proud of our gorgeous and hardworking dancers who poured their hearts and souls into the creative process to bring these works to life over the past 3 months and we’re so grateful to our artistic team @corystieg for beautifully moderating today’s conversations, @oloveya16 for nurturing these 3 ballets in the rehearsal process, and the one and only @emilycardea whose inspiring training has helped us all grow so much ♥️♥️♥️
