Another excellent drawing/painting masterclass @thewaldronstudio in Sussex, this time delivered by the equally excellent @houghliz ! Such an enjoyable, hospitable two days, taking landscape into abstraction, testing the boundaries of reality by following the process…
Big thank you to Liz and to @theathompsonceramics , and a really buzzy group… by @barbkenn

Thankfully just before this heatwave hit, enjoyed a brilliant workshop with @samboughton in the very beautiful grounds of @thewaldronstudio in Sussex.
Sam brings such generous energy to her teaching, abstract landscape drawing and painting. The Waldron, deep in the Sussex countryside, has it all - barns, landscape, sheep, and swathes of colourful meadow planting and Mediterranean beds. Masterclasses in pottery and paint hosted wonderfully by @theathompsonceramics - thank you both! by @barbkenn

Today a visit to Katie Sollohub’s ‘the artist’s den’ open studio in Shoreham. Katie’s ‘open sketchbook’ is full of easy ideas - as ever, creative, free-flowing, inventive. This year it’s all about cardboard!
Still on tomorrow Sunday 21st June…

Benton End: A Paradise of Pollen and Paint…totally delightful exhibition at Garden Museum, Lambeth. The original house, garden and radical art school are now under Garden Museum stewardship. Recreation of interiors with letters, postcards, dining table and kitchen sink, paintings by Cedric Morris (who set up Benton End art school), Joan Warburton, drawings by Lucien Freud (student at BE), the BE greenhouse where Beth Chatto learnt her trade from Morris, even Elizabeth David cookbook covers designed by Morris. Fab! @benton.end @gardenmuseum by @barbkenn

Contemporary miniatures on huge scale, back lit panels, created by the amazing Singh Twins, reflecting the chequered history of the British in India, the Raj, appalling cultural domination and slavery (in some cases largely to do with the cotton trade between India and Britain). @kewgardens @thesinghtwins_art by @barbkenn

Best of all on my Sunday visit to Yorkshire with @womenofthecloth
Playing With Fire, an exhibition curated by the always inspiring @edmunddewaal in celebration of the late Danish potter Axel Salto. Brilliant juxtaposition of their different approaches and outcomes. Made especially for the exhibition, de Waal’s five enormous dense, weighty and dark lidded vessels; almost elusive words scratched into the clay - a complete contrast to his three units of fine porcelain and tarnished silver set in a calm white cube.
Salto’s pots sit in a dark space on curving central platforms - ‘strange fruit’, tactile and dripping with rich glaze. His rough drawings and textile designs vivid and inspiring…
Listen to de Waal talk about the exhibition and his own practice on @talkart (brilliant as ever!)

Elizabeth Fritsch work on display at @hepworthwakefield . Loved the matte patterns and strangely illusional flattened shapes. Presented in the artist’s own groupings which she compares to ‘movements in classical music in which the arrangement adds up to more than the sum of its parts…enabling people to enjoy the work as a form of dance and play in space’… by @barbkenn

Shoes made in every material, from sealskin to cellophane, toad skin to embroidered textiles…loved this Florence museum dedicated to Italian shoe designer Salvatore Ferragamo and containing 10,000 models of shoes, many created for his celebrity clients (note Georgia O’Keefe photo). Work dating from the 1920s until his death in 1960. Fascinating… by @barbkenn
