BC is a hybrid practice designing and undertaking acts of building for systemic change in construction. Standardized circular materials by @leem.works
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
What can natural, bio-based and reused materials teach us about the way we design and build?

Together with the Flanders Architecture Institute (VAi), we’ve produced Material Shift, a new podcast series exploring the shifts taking place in architectural practice through conversations with architects, artists, builders and researchers...

The first season, New Aesthetics, looks beyond the surface of buildings to explore the material choices, labour and energy behind them. How do we rethink architectural aesthetics when working with materials that are reused, grown or taken from the earth? And how might these choices change not only the way buildings look, but also how they are made and experienced?

The first episode, Designing with Nature, is now available, featuring Nicky Vancaudenberg (@agwa_architecture), Karel Loontiens (@aardig_gedacht & @studioloho) and Theresa Zschäbitz (@bauhaus_earth).

Material Shift is part of ACCEL (Architects in Circular Construction Elevated Learning), an Erasmus+ project developed in collaboration with @@atelier_amaco , @facultearchitectureulb , @rwthaachenuniversity and @vlaams_architectuurinstituut .

What if knowledge of the surroundings becomes a core value in design practice?

Materials are becoming increasingly scarce and cost-prohibitive. Since the industrial era, the global procurement of resources from distant markets has frequently undercut the financial viability of local production. The resilience and sustainability of our construction sector depend on a more rigorous understanding of the potential inherent in regional material flows, local soils and existing built infrastructure. A bioregion transcends administrative borders, defining a territory through its natural logic. How can architects, urban planners and policy-makers play a proactive role in raising awareness about and actively engaging with the bioregion?

Grounded Futures 1/3

Our cities have become our newest quarries.
Yearly, Barcelona's public works generate thousands of tons of mineral waste: concrete, paving, and earthworks. But what if this isn't just waste, but the foundation for a new geological layer?

Through the Grounded Futures project (part of the ‘Mineral: Architectures of Urban Mining’ challenge for @uia2026bcn ) we mapped Barcelona’s bioregion. For millions of years, marine biomineralization formed vast calcareous deposits around the city. Today, this calcium rich matter is continuously excavated and demolished across urban sites.
We are creating a new geological stratum at an unprecedented scale, but with massive carbon emissions. Our challenge: How can we reintroduce this demolition waste into a new, regenerative building material that honors the city's marine past.

If you want to find out more about the grounded futures Project, check the project on bcmaterials.org, there you will find a link to the lecture about it, check out the publication in the book “becoming. Architects for a planet in transformation“ or watch the short film "grounded futures" by Alexandre Humbert.

On Tuesday, October 20th, BC studies is hosting a roundtable discussion at @stadsatelierdeville.brussels Organised in the framework of the Fall School, the event will focus on the theme “Productive City 2.0”.

Ten years after the initial debates around the productive city, this panel takes stock of how we can retain and reconnect industry, craft, and circular material flows within the Brussels Canal Zone. Rather than treating urban manufacturing and housing as competing land uses, the discussion examines how circular hubs can serve as structural catalysts for climate neutrality, preserve industrial heritage, and anchor inclusive local communities.

Panellists:
• Frederik Serroen @bouwmeestermaitrearchitecte
• Charlotte Kokken @vooruit.brussels
• Oana Bogdan @bogdan___design
• Ward Verbakel @plusoffice_urb_arch
Moderated by Zeynep Topçu & Henri Uijtterhaegen.

As one of the oldest vernacular construction techniques, wattle and daub combines a woven structural lattice (the wattle) with an earthen plaster mixture (the daub) enriched with natural fibers. The woven framework provides tensile strength and flexibility, while the earth mixture adds mass, insulation, and durability.

Through WEAVING WALLS, an elective course with @actofbuilding_rwth , students joined us at BC materials to explore how this historic technique can be reinvented for contemporary architecture using prefabricated timber-framed earthen panels. by @bc_asm

Today, the Design Museum Gent reopens its doors to the public.

The museum's new wing marks a major milestone for circular construction on a civic scale. Its pale, textured facade is crafted from 82,000 bespoke Gent Waste Bricks, unfired, lime-cured blocks made from 63% recycled municipal waste from Gent, produced locally at the historic Arsenaal site just 5 km away.

By rethinking traditional manufacturing, the project delivers a fully certified facade material with just one-third of the embodied carbon of a standard clay-fired brick, demonstrating how local resources and urban waste streams can form landmark architecture.

Designed by Carmody Groarke and Atama in collaboration with Re-st, the new monolithic extension seamlessly blends into Gent’s historic center. Matching the tones and rooflines of traditional Flemish brickwork, the project completes a long-awaited extension that connects the museum's historic buildings into an accessible, continuous loop for the city.

Inside, the material continuity carries through, featuring a rammed earth column executed by @grond_studio and clay plaster.

Built in 1889 as the original stables for the horse-drawn trams connecting Schaerbeek to Brussels and the Bois de la Cambre, Les Écuries van de Tram holds significant historical value.
Our transformation of the site is rooted in the preservation of its industrial heritage. Rather than altering its fundamental character, the project retains as much of the existing structure as possible. The primary façade remains untouched, while three carefully positioned openings in the roof introduce natural light deep into the building’s interior.

Through precise and minimal interventions that respect the logic of the original structure, a coherent architectural system is established throughout the building. This approach allows the 19th-century monolith to be carefully adapted to contemporary uses while maintaining the identity and integrity of the existing architecture.

The result is going to be a flexible, multifunctional building that brings together the EFP, workshops, a brasserie, and the existing organic food market. Rather than treating these programmes as separate elements, the project unifies them within the existing structure, giving the historic building a new and active role while preserving the character that defines it. by @bc_asm

On Monday, October 5th, we are gathering at BC for a roundtable discussion alongside @civic_square , @darkmatter_labs , @stadsatelierdeville.brussels , and Brussels @bouwmeestermaitrearchitecte .

Bringing together pioneering voices in urban transition, this session examines how grassroots initiatives evolve into permanent civic infrastructure to drive systemic change across European cities. The panel will explore practical conditions for scaling local experimentation, shifting governance, and embedding circular material practices into the fabric of urban environments.

A valuable moment of exchange for actors shaping the future of our building culture.
