LAND | Learning from elsewhere, thinking about home. We’ve spent the past week between Brussels and Arles on a European Precedent Visit brought together by @civic_square , alongside people exploring different ways of building, making and living together. What stays with us is Civic Square’s radical generosity, the openness with which knowledge, relationships and unfinished practice are shared. We don’t need to have it all figured out to learn from one another. We’ve explored earth, clay, timber, reuse and different ways of building. And our thoughts keep returning to Margate. What resources are beneath our feet? What techniques have been forgotten? What might we learn from Black, Brown and Diaspora building traditions, and the knowledge and labour too often overlooked? Could the process of making PDC’s future home become a place for experimentation and new skills, especially for young people? How do they get to shape what comes next? Serious big ups to everyone who shared this experience with us. Makers, architects, engineers, community organisers, artists, dreamers and everything in between. So many different perspectives, experiences and ways of seeing the world. Huge gratitude to Civic Square and everyone who opened their doors, shared their practice and travelled alongside us. IN THE PHOTOS 1. Earth in our hands 2. Materials in storage 3. Mixing and testing 4. Reclaimed tiles 5. Why Materials Matter 6. Spaces for making/production 7. Learning together 8. Timber and building details 9. Around the table, together Taking it all back to Margate.

#builtenvironment #howest #duurzaamheid #material #reuse

High tech, low life” is how cyberpunk described the city of the future. It reads less like fiction every year. On Friday 16 October I’m moderating a panel at @wiels_brussels, part of the Flanders Technology & Innovation festival (@fti_festival), about what biodesign has to say about that. Brussels has asked this question before: around 1900, art nouveau proposed that a building could feel like an organism. Today the biology is literal. I invited five people who work with living systems in very different ways, from building with excavated earth to teaching designers how to read biology in the age of AI: Ken De Cooman – BC Architects & Materials @bc_asm Jara Salueña – VUB, Fungateria @jarainscience Rachel Armstrong – KU Leuven / RAAD @raad_kul Alice Jarry – Concordia University, Speculative Life Biolab @materials_materiality Raphael Kim – Biodesign Academy @raphael___kim @biodesign_academy Rachel’s installation CABLE, which runs on soil bacteria, is on view in the exhibition. Beyond High Tech – Low Life: Imagining the Living City through Biodesign Friday 16 October, 13:30–15:00 WIELS, Brussels Thanks to @gluon_bxl and especially @jaegerchristophede for the invitation.

Babini Geysen and Dandelion are also architectural practices behind Stadsatelierdeville. Babini Geysen is a Brussels-based architecture practice designing for uncertain futures through research-driven projects and built prototypes. Dandelion is a collaborative architectural practice combining built projects, research, and experimentation to explore how architecture mediates relationships between people, materials, and their environment. Babini Geysen and Dandelion work explores alternative building systems with a focus on structural reuse and biological materials, integrating low-tech and more natural building physics solutions. The building’s story is non-linear and still ongoing. Aiming to become a built experiment, the design is structured upon an open and adaptable framework shaped by continuous research, evolving processes, and meanings. Image by © Olivier Campagne
