Happy Built To Collide release day for all those that celebrate 🎉 What started as an experiment in ‘how long can I hold tension on one chord before it stops feeling good’ (the answer is forever) turned into one of my favourite collaborations we’ve ever released. A decent portion of the guitars you hear still remain from that original demo, recorded in one afternoon back in like 2023. Honoured to play my small part in contributing to Tess’s stellar new album, it’s out in just a couple of weeks, get ready.

Content attempt 2, Instagram filter addition. IG filters are BACK and in a big way. My old cat really loved music and Yoko is pretty non-plussed, she’s more smell-oriented than sound. This song started life (and may hopefully continue life some day) as a dream-pop ballad with big gated snare and chorus guitar so if it doesn’t make sense picture Cocteau Twins singing it.

🚨I’m playing a solo show🚨 at @congresscoffeeyyc, with @marc___mclaughlin, on Sept 28! I’m excited to play some of my own songs again, including this new one, it’s been too long. May have a special guest joining me for a couple too.

6250kms* - 21 days - 15 shows - 3 school visits - 2 radio sessions - 4 provinces - 3 times through the first 3/4 of Independance Day - 1 special tour birthday - 10 members of the extended jonnie family in the van at one point or another - 1 theatre to ourselves for a late night showing of Sinners - 1 magician hustling us with card tricks for cigarettes outside a hotel bar.

Innumerable bags of cheesies/moving van aeropresses/late night card games/vitamin gummies/van naps/beautiful connections.

Too many memories to photograph, too many photographs to share here, too many dicks on the wall of the Starlite Room green room.

0 bad shows, 0 bad days.

Let’s do it again, okahay!

Healing a human is like peeling an onion. Sure. We all know that. But getting hit with each layer is so harrrrrd! This song came out of the cocky assumption that I was finally free of some past stuff, then getting triggered by some little thing one day and being catapulted back into healing mode.
It’s a gift to be a person, and I do my best to ride each wave. But it ain’t easy! Just when I think I’ve landed in a flowery field of sunshine, I find a little more work to do.

This might be my fave song I’ve written to date, complete with the loveliest piano stylings of @colincarbonera (who wrote it with me!), and produced by @benjaminlongman with @andvinnyondrums on drums @rauthclement on bass and @pendletonjams on guitar.

Change is a compass.

Two old friends, separated by the Atlantic for the larger part of adulthood, and a grandiose conversation about growing older. When we were teenagers, studying at the BRIT School in London, we spent every minute together in the studio or on stage, with absolute unwavering confidence in our teenage vision and a fervorous commitment to doing things our way. In the years since, Ben has moved to Canada, Tessa stayed in London and Amsterdam and our music-making days became limited, but on the cherished occasions that we can get together a trusted muscle is flexed. Except these days, a more mellow approach wins out.

Let the current carve, score out the fringe of your silhouette.

Fervour gives way to flow, stubbornness gives way to shared goals, and the agitated music-making of our youth gives way to an 8hr jet-lagged basement studio session that forged this song almost whole cloth.

How could you know what you came here for?

We decided to record a simple live version. Recorded half in Calgary, half in Amsterdam. Half at night, half in the afternoon. Half for your enjoyment, half for ours.

Calgary weather took a chill last night and it got me feeling like a human being again. It might be sunny this afternoon but toque season is upon us, make no mistake. The plaid is out, the stubble is overgrown, the masc is masc-ing. Come see me tonight at the @kingeddyyyc opening up for @_hermitess_, I almost certainly won’t play this almost-song but they’ll all be just as much of a bummer fear not.
