Having a great time at @breakoutwest! At any conference, it always takes me until Day 2 to get rid of the jitters and just send it… buuuuut after the first half of day 2, I’m all-in now… LFG!

More importantly, I just wanted to share a lovely experience I had today and give a HUGE shoutout both to @goodandplentywpg (who do incredible work for Winnipeg’s music community and beyond)/hosts @ilabarkermusic & Amber Neufeld, and to all the other incredible artists & producers who were featured at the Good & Plenty Feedforward panel today: @summerwitch, @jintingzhao, @effemera.mp3 and @raven.nowhere.

To the new followers who were in the room and got a sneak preview of some new ‘FUZZ today—happy to meet y’all and thanks so much for all the kindness. 💛

For the folks that said they’d take my music as medicine to heal on a bad day (how powerful is that?), or felt like they’d been dropped into the middle of a conversation in my own head (hell yeah, but also buckle up!), or clocked the records I love (which makes me so happy), or engaged in great mini-discussions about syncopation + formant shifting + harmony arranging + distortion + more (love all of it)… honestly, I can’t wait to take all that love and encouragement and channel it into the last 20% of this record I’m making in a couple weeks! Thank youuuu!

After a crazy summer in the rest of my music world—hitting all three coasts in August alone—I’ve been back home and in the lab for most of September.

Over the course of this year, I’ve gone from being really afraid to release anything as BIG FUZZ to really, really excited.

Being an Artist™ is still “new” to me and it’s been a fun journey balancing both the studio and a lot of meetings lately.

But every day the picture starts to get clearer.

Speaking of journeys and meetings, I’m flying back out to BC to attend BreakOut West at the end of the month and would love to connect.

A few weeks back I spent the better part of 10 days working on a few new tracks.

As I’ve settled back into BIG FUZZ, I’ve began crafting songs a bit more seriously, going from “Can I even do this?” to “How can I make every part of this better?”

In the past, I’ve always been someone who likes to iterate a ton—record something once, analyze the hell out of it, record it again once I’ve wrapped my head around it—but I was SO uncomfortable with the idea of doing that for myself at first, so the first two singles were more or less off-the-cuff.

This time I feel comfortable saying: I’m going to keep working on this one, but it’s fun to share a work-in-progress! by @bigfuzzmusic

I AM UP TO NO GOOD

Spent the last 10 days in a bit of a musical haze—writing for myself and finishing a handful of projects for other artists. Somewhere towards the end, this one appeared. I think I’ll post more soon.

One week of I’M ONLY DROWNING.

When I was writing this, I saw a photo of The Beaches @thebeachesband wearing shirts based on their single ‘Takes One to Know One’, each member wearing one of the lyrics “antisocial / maladjusted / noncommittal / can’t be trusted”. I really loved the visual. Such a cool idea.

It inspired me to ask myself questions, which in turn shaped the lyrics of I’M ONLY DROWNING:

If I were four people on stage—looking at myself equally critically—what would my shirts say? (“Unbecoming / unpredictable / always ashamed / afraid of dying”)

Further to that, what are four key themes that have shaped me; things I wear on me constantly whether I like it or not? (“Desperate measures, fear, and love, and harm”)

“I’M ONLY DROWNING” is out now.
This is me at my most vulnerable.

Today, I was reading a study that was just released about mental health in the music industry. The findings of the study [“Soundcheck: Mental Health in the Canadian Music Industry”] are pretty stark. You should read it if you haven’t, even if you’re not in the music industry… actually, scratch that… especially if you’re not in the music industry.

I absolutely fall into the 86% of musicians & music industry professionals that have “personally experienced [mental health] challenges”.

Still do, especially at this time of year.

When I started writing for BIG FUZZ—not identifying as a guitarist, singer, or songwriter—I realized that I’d have to dig deep and get comfortable with being uncomfortable to write anything at all.

The first two songs I’ve released aren’t songs for songwriting’s sake. They are a direct window into my own intrusive thoughts and insecurities. That was the only way I could start doing this.

So, here’s another little glimpse inside my head.
