This is a difficult week for Houston gymnastics.

With Stars Gymnastics and Woodlands Gymnastics Academy closing their doors, our community is losing places that have shaped generations of young athletes. That isn’t something we celebrate.

Those gyms held far more than equipment: first cartwheels, hard-won skills, friendships, comebacks and dreams. Those memories deserve respect.

Behind the closures are athletes with competitions ahead, some pursuing college opportunities, and coaches and families facing an uncertain next chapter. They need support, not a sales pitch.

We may compete against one another. That doesn’t make us enemies. Children are not market share, and another gym’s hardship is not our victory.

To every gym, coach, parent and teammate welcoming someone new: learn their names. Explain instead of assuming. Make room for their memories and their grief.

You shouldn’t have to stop loving where you came from in order to belong somewhere new.

Every program has its own expectations. We can explain those with patience and respect. There should be no “us versus them.” What feels like growth to one gym may still feel like loss to a family walking through its doors.

We get to go first. This is where our values become real.

“Look for the helpers.” This time, let’s be them.

To the athletes, coaches and families facing an unexpected goodbye: wherever you go next, I hope you find open doors, patient coaches and people willing to make room.

You are still part of Houston gymnastics.

We’ll see you in the gym.

Feels like just yesterday when you walked to the doors at the gym nervous about whether or not you’d make flyer on the team and now here you are cheering and possibly one of the best UT games I’ve seen in recent memory. Absolutely in all of all that you’ve earned accomplished worked for and achieved!!!

There are no words to describe how much I appreciate the kindness, support, care, and focus that the @stratford_cheer @shs_boosterclub have given not just myself, but to my entire family. While my journey back to health is still ongoing, I am humbled by the generosity pouring forth from this community.

Spotting should be like a seatbelt - they should only feel you when they need it.

I wish I learned earlier in my@coaching career, to better explain to athletes that spotting does not mean I will actually touch you - and better ask them if they want to feel my spot or if I can simple be there under them in case of an error.
