The Sankofa Exchange begins today, as part of Black SGL/LGBTQ+ Baltimore comes together to learn from one another and build a plan for what comes next.

We'll start with what's ours to protect: the path to homeownership, the title that secures it, and the rights that keep money in our pockets. From there, we turn to caring for one another, with STOP THE BLEEDยฎ and naloxone trainings, an honest look at the war on drugs, and space to heal through art. We'll explore personal style, creative storytelling, and what adult friendship and chosen family really require. Then we'll focus on building power: learning from trans leaders, making room for young people, holding our elected officials accountable, and designing the future we deserve.

Along the way, with Collective Imagining sessions, we'll turn what we've learned into real action plans for our community.

Say hello to Phillip Westry, Executive Director of FreeState Justice, joining us for our day of Economics & Technology.

Phillip(he/him) is an attorney, nonprofit executive, and civil rights advocate with 15+ years of experience at the intersection of law, public policy, and community impact. As Executive Director of FreeState Justice, Maryland's LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, he leads work to expand access to legal services, advance policy change, strengthen community partnerships, and respond to the evolving needs of LGBTQ+ Marylanders. Throughout his career โ€” from representing people facing housing instability, consumer debt, and discrimination to leading a statewide civil rights organization โ€” he has used law, advocacy, and leadership to help people navigate systems, challenge injustice, and create greater access, dignity, and opportunity.

๐Ÿ“ฃ The Economic Impact of Knowing Your Rights

Not knowing your rights can cost you more than you think. In this session, we'll look at everyday situations where people unknowingly leave money on the table, including workplace pay and leave, housing and security deposits, consumer protections, benefits eligibility, and dealing with debt collectors. You'll leave knowing what to look for, what questions to ask, and where to turn when your rights and your money are on the line.

As part of the Sankofa Exchange Conference, we are proud to screen 'The Elements of Mutual Aid,' a four-part docu-series that explores how to transform our mutual aid efforts into deeply relational, strategic, and revolutionary practices. Each part connects to that day's theme.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Fire: Mutual aid is our spark of humanity, and we must defend it as those in power try to stomp it out. This chapter sets the series' foundation: What is mutual aid, how is it different from charity, why is it at odds with those in power, and can it help sustain our resistance to oppression? Meet supply distros in Detroit and Atlanta alongside unhoused families in Los Angeles reclaiming homes from the State.

๐ŸŒŠ Water: Colonization & capitalism are dams holding us back from each other. This chapter is all about tearing them down so we can let mutual aid flow between us. We discuss creating safer spaces, handling crisis without police, & navigating power dynamics, ๏ฟฝburnout, & conflict. Meet a self-defense project for trans femmes of color in Oakland, a group building crisis response skills in Detroit, and a community project combating patriarchy in Los Angeles.

๐ŸŒณ Earth: This chapter looks at how to grow projects with strong, interconnected roots that can support communities. It explores how local needs and capacity should inform our projects, how we can network smaller projects over large areas, and how we can build infrastructure that outlasts crisis points. Meet a harm reduction project in Tucson, an international decentralized disaster response network, and a web of mutual aid centers in Puerto Rico.

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Air: Like the wind, our conditions are always shifting. The spirit of Air teaches us to speak, listen, strategize, and change with the seasons. This chapter explores decision-making, managing resources without hoarding them, weighing the pros and cons of formality and scale, and making our projects accessible.

Say hello to Cherokaree Tsalagi, CEO/Creative Director of Tsalagi Textiles Studio and 2025 Sankofa Award Winner, as part of our day of Arts & Culture.

๐Ÿ“ฃ Stitch Your Story Into A Creative Ecosystem

This session explores how to build critical-thinking skills through a community arts education framework. Using sewing as an art form, this session shows how a creative ecosystem requires a structure to support action-oriented goals. Stitching, a repetitive form of art-making, creates wellness through stillness and meditative benefits that alleviate PTSD, anxiety, and depression. During this session, you will stitch a Tree of Life, with branches representing steps toward building your creative ecosystem. With each branch, you'll also write out the necessary parts of the process. The creative ecosystem becomes a manifesto of what your intentions will become: roots for the goal, project, process, or concept you need to solve. By the end, you will have built a foundation for your creative ecosystem that weaves all your critical thinking together, with solutions provided by your Tree of Life.

This recognition belongs to every volunteer, performer, organizer, sponsor, and community member who has shown up for us. So let us remind you who we are, in case anybody forgot:

BLAQ Equity Baltimore is Black-founded and Black-led. Since 2002. Not for a season, not for a grant cycle, or for a photo op. We have always stayed who we are, and we have always put us first, even amid transitions, instability, controversies, pandemics, and so on.

And because we put BLAQ folks first, we need BLAQ folks to show up. Not just with your dollars, though those certainly matter. Your presence. Your hands. Your time. Your voice. If something isn't right and you want it to change, don't sit at home. Don't drag it in the group chat or in the comments. Come to the event, tell us to our faces, and then roll up your sleeves and help build what you want to see. Critique without contribution doesn't move us forward โ€” it just adds to the noise.

Black Prides are Black institutions, and Black institutions need support like any Black business. Without it, we fall. Look around โ€” Nonprofits are failing and folding almost every day. The institutions that were supposed to hold us are crumbling, cutting, and walking away.

But you know what never leaves? Our chosen family. Our friends. Our community. The folks who fed you when you got put out. The ones who held you at the funeral, at the clinic, at the club, at the kitchen table.

We are all we got to protect what's ours: our history, our legacies, our futures, our very lives.

If we don't get in the habit of showing out now, in 5 or 10 years we could be looking at a Black Pride in Baltimore produced by "the Blacks" in a white-led organization. Or a Black Pride so fractured, so siloed, so disconnected that we can't find each other across our communities, identities, and experiences anymore โ€” A house divided cannot stand.

This October, show up. Volunteer. Donate. Bring your friends. Bring your critiques and your capacity. Bring your whole Black, queer, beautiful self.

We've been here. We're still here. And with you, we'll always be here.

In solidarity,
BLAQ Equity Baltimore
