Almost 15 years ago—accompanied by a group of collaborators—Blessing and I drove out into the California desert to make our first film: EEL.

The next 11 days were some of the most explosively creative of my entire life. The actors—Nathalie, Ammar, Sina, Ty, Brennan—interpreting a more or less inscrutable text, gave some of the strangest, most kinetic, and deeply committed performances I’d seen before (or, frankly, since).

Miles Kittredge and Will Gordh, with the help of Cooper Griggs, captured those performances in images so stark and gorgeous that watching the scenes unfold on the monitor gave the viewer a kind of aesthetic vertigo; you didn’t want to look away, but sometimes you had to so you didn’t pass out.

The script we started with told a metacinematic story about a filmmaker pushing his actors to their physical and emotional extremes in order to produce an ecstatic work of art.

What we made overwhelms that logline. Looking back on the film a decade and a half later, EEL seems now like a preview of resurging authoritarianism in the West—and how tyrants eventually get eaten by their fanatical spawn.

Thanks to @ulasnieg, EEL premiered in Wrocław, Poland as part of @mff_nowehoryzonty ’s @americanfilmfestival . It debuted stateside in Sarasota, where it was nominated for the Independent Visions Award. But very few people have ever seen it. Caustic in tone and not really feature length—it has oscillated over the years between 45 and 61 minutes—no one really knew what to do with it.

But it remains the boldest, wildest thing I’ve ever had a hand in making. Maybe it’ll find its way back into the world, now. Seems like it’s about time.

But regardless of other people’s interest in our work, revisiting the film this week—and my memories of making it—has reminded me so deeply about the delirious, manic, tightrope joy of making films. Seems like it’s also about time to shoot another one.

Decided to do a supper club for every month of the year as an act of creation, a way to share food histories personal and cultural, and a way to bring strangers together at the table. Also because I missed cooking and making with others.
