Working in the pharmaceutical industry, leading and managing clinical trials exposes you to so many incredible opportunities to interact with amazing people. Following a talk I organised and hosted with Dame Elizabeth Anionwu (the UK’s first sickle cell nurse) last October, she helped to connect me with @sicklecelluk, directly into the inbox of John James OBE, CEO of the Sickle Cell Society to curate a wonderful @blackpharmaorg networking event.A lot of people, (including health professionals) still don’t know what sickle cell is and the 15,000 in the UK living with it are not just Africans, but Mediterranean and South Asians tooThis shows there’s still so much work to be done to increase awareness and educate people on sickle cell to help change attitudes of clinicians and the general public.Did you know that black people only make up 1% of the NHS Blood Donation and Transplant register? If you’re not sure of your blood type or whether you have the sickle cell trait an easy way to find out is by signing up to give blood.
