MAKEUP - Ultraviolet (Year 11 Beauty)

The third of three collaborations between our year 11 makeup course and our HSC Screen and Media students. Makeup students created looks designed to be seen under ultraviolet black light.

We photographed the looks in regular coloured lights against a black backdrop, and then shifted to purely black light for a short burst. The results are luminous and magical.

Lighting - Juliet, Scarlett and the whole Makeup class

Thankyou to teachers Jack Chesher, Liz Tagliavento and Michael Mclennan for this great collaboration.

The Beauty Statement of Attainment is a 2 unit course that HSC students at Bradfield can complete over Year 11 and 12, as is the Certificate III in Screen and Media. Check out the next Bradfield Open Day on Tuesday October 20th to find out more.

TUFF SOAP: Weakness is Visible

This year our HSC Screen and Media cohort completed the unit ‘Develop techniques for presenting to camera’ by creating ads for the vegan, martial arts soap ‘Tuff Soap’.

This is one of 25 Tuff Soaps ads made this year by Year 12. Mahlia wrote, performed and edited this satirical piece, which was filmed by the class. Assets from Pexels, Soundsnap and Artlist libraries augment the edit.

Thankyou again to @tuff.soap (and Nusrine in particular) for allowing our students to playfully promote the brand in these exercises.

Join us for our next Open Day (Tuesday October 20th) if you’d like to find out more about studying filmmaking at Bradfield.

ENGLISH READINGS:

Today our HSC English students undertake the first of their written exams for English. We wish our students all the best - keep cool. You’ve got this.

Recently we held an evening of English Readings in front of the St Leonards TAFE Film and TV LED wall for an audience of peers and family. Normally used for virtual production film shoots, the video wall became the canvas to showcase English works as they were read out by students.

Thankyou to Rhema Tieu for organising the evening, to our English staff for their support of the students and to @tafensw_filmtvsound for supporting the evening.

PROJECT: 1995 – ‘Dancing with Light’

Furthering our look at the history of Bradfield’s Projects, ‘Dancing with Light’ was a 1995 collaboration between the Australian People’s Theatre and Bradfield Senior College.

‘Dancing with Light’ – as with the 1996’s ‘Rivers of Light’ - reflected the Australian Peoples’ Theatre’s approach to production, famously combining multicultural and sometimes multilingual storytelling that allowed young actors to weave their heritage, native languages and personal family histories directly into the works. They were theatrical events that utilised innovative lighting, shadow play, and movement, to create highly poetic, accessible storytelling.

As with the 1996 production, ‘Dancing with Light’ was co-directed by Patrick Guerrera, Anna Messariti, and Christopher Ryan.

The initiative was specifically set up as a theatre performance training program to empower young people from culturally and ethnically diverse backgrounds. It aimed to give participants concrete, practical skills directly useful for finding pathways into the entertainment and media industry.

Many of the features of the ‘Dancing with Light’ project still underpin Bradfield’s use of project-based learning to this day, including the school’s emphasis on vocational pathways, creative synergies between many fields, the integration of technology and the arts and above all, the collaboration between vocational educational and creative industries.

Thankyou to Anna Messariti, Bradfield Director, for the research and rehearsal photos that underpinned this post.

PROJECT: 1996 – ‘Rivers of Light’

‘Rivers of Light’ was a 1996 collaboration between the Australian People’s Theatre (launched by Sydney Theatre Company Associate Director John Howard) and Bradfield Senior College. The youth-oriented arm of the project was called Level Crossing.

‘Rivers of Light’ reflected the Australian Peoples’ Theatre’s approach to production, famously combining multicultural and sometimes multilingual storytelling that allowed young actors to weave their heritage, native languages and personal family histories directly into the works. They were theatrical events that utilised innovative lighting, shadow play, and movement, to create highly poetic, accessible storytelling.

An extended public season of ‘Rivers of Light’ was staged at Pact Theatre in Erskineville, as part of Carnivale, Sydney’s multicultural and multidisciplinary arts festival, during September, 1996. The co-production was devised and created within Bradfield’s weekly classes in Voice, Movement and Performance Making, which took place all day each Saturday, throughout the year, on the original North Sydney campus. Back then, student performers worked towards their TAFE Certificates in Workplace Skills, just as they do today. And take a look at the credits . . .

PHOTO BOOTH:

Thanks to one of graduating cohort’s generous parents- Sema Erzin - our HSC students were fortunate to have a Signature Mirror Booth installed for the last two days of classes prior to graduation.

There are many photos that cannot be shared, but we are pleased to share this sampling. Even the class of 2025 came back to use it, and a few of our staff too.

HSC exams commence next Tuesday!

Thankyou again to Sema Erzin.

SMILE: 90 Years of Luna Park

Happy 91st Birthday to Luna Park! As Luna Park Sydney rounds out another birthday, we look back on ‘Dream Ride’, the immersive film by our graduating HSC cohort that paid tribute to the Park’s history. The full film can be viewed at our YouTube.

A great deal of the footage from this segment comes from 4 different evenings at the Park, including the Vivid Festival, Eid, and an evening in May.

Footage comes from all members of the camera team, including Zara, Cy, Apo, Alexa, Isa and Lily, with teachers Chloe Angel, Shane Miller and Michael Mclennan in support. The performers were @skyeslondon and @mazifofilms, along with the many performance team members of the Park.

Music came from our graduate @joelfell.music along with an original song created by Kenya Borlotti with our music teacher Merv Sequeira.

Thankyou to all the support @lunaparksydney gave us in the creation of this work, in particular John Hughes and Lucy Keeler.
