In response to the state of Utah’s recent decision to allow Maple Lake Academy to continue to operate, which is overwhelmingly consistent with their usual leniency in regulating TTI facilities, we are organizing a demonstration in Utah.

We will be holding this demonstration at the Provo Historic Courthouse from 8am-11am Thursday, 9/29/22.

We will then move the demonstration to the South Steps of the State Capital building in Salt Lake City from 2pm to 5pm that day.

All TTI survivors and allies are welcome to join us.

Please note that per the state laws, no profanity, hateful speech, or acts of violence or vandalism will be tolerated.

On January 16th a girl passed away while in the care of Maple Lake Academy in Utah. On April 8th the staff did not seek “immediate medical care” for a different resident who hit her head on the pavement, lost consciousness and was vomiting. On April 9th, the facility did not “follow emergency room medical orders and permitted a client with a concussion to participate in strenuous activity.” This is the first treatment program that Utah’s Office of Licensing has shut down in at least seven years. The closest it came was in 2019, when Red Rock Canyon School relinquished its certification after a riot and media scrutiny regarding the violent abuse taking place at that facility.

In Utah alone, there has been documentation of two girls in just over two years who died in youth treatment centers — one at West Ridge Academy, and the other at Maple Lake Academy.

Ask A Survivor

Our first official Ask A Survivor comes from a survivor of the Cascade School who asks: Where can I find resources to locate a local therapist who might know something about these schools and how to help me?

Great question! Finding a therapist can be challenging even under the best of circumstances. In addition, we recognize that the survivor community has a frequently has a special relationship with "therapy" due to emotional or physical abuse being labeled as "group therapy" within our programs. Even when we do seek out therapy as adults we find ourselves having to re-explain our trauma to a handful of therapists before even finding one who is a good "fit." We hope these tips will help make the process a little bit easier and we want to assure you that we will continue to provide support around this topic.

The survivor community is severely under-served and under-supported. We have partnered with the Copeland Center for Wellness and Recovery to offer a Peer Support Training.

Sessions will be guided by:
@adventurous_spirit_amey Amey Dettmer, a troubled teen industry survivor who has built her career in peer support and facilitating systems change. She enjoys any activity in nature and spending time with her children and pets.

And Ryan Tempesco, a trans individual who has worked in creating and facilitating safe spaces of mutual learning for over 5 years. He enjoys traveling and spending time with his husband and cat.

We have a few spots remaining so please message us if you would like to jump on board with this round of Peer Support Training! We start this Thursday, May 19th. by @breakingcodesilenceofficial

Survivor support opportunity! We advocate for all journeys to recovery including personal therapy but also want to be clear that this is not therapy or "a program." We are so excited to announce that this online peer group will be moderated by fellow survivor, Amey Dettmer (@adventurous_spirit_amey ). Sessions will run on Thursdays in June and July. It will be completely free to join and a certificate will be awarded at the conclusion of the sessions. If you feel called to join us we would love to have you! A HUGE thank you to #Lifetime for telling the stories of these survivors in your film #cruelinstruction

The movie follows the story of Kayla Adams, a 16 year old girl who gets sent away to a therapeutic boarding "school" by her parents at the recommendation of her counselor. This film is based off the real life experiences of Courtney Konopasek (Kayla) and Ashley DeBoer (Amanda), who both attended the Provo Canyon School.

We are so grateful for the special that aired directly following the film which was titled "Beyond the Headlines: Cruel Instruction" and featured survivors sharing their experience of abuse in this unregulated industry.
