Now available: I Dreamed You Were Here by Jessica Wohl

$30 + $4 for shipping 📬

I Dreamed You Were Here documents Jessica Wohl’s solo exhibition of the same name at the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Using the language of quilting, Wohl transforms the Hunter Museum Mansion Stairwell with layered textile banners made from found garments, linens, and other discarded household items. Her process of disassembling and reusing textiles creates a tactile exchange with the item’s former owner - the new forms that emerge are collaborations with those histories. These pieces address the hidden potential beneath the surface of our day-to-day systems of care, labor, and relationships. In her work, Wohl uses the softness of the material and the intricately stitched text to communicate with the viewer, inviting them to join her in a quiet revolution against exploitation and oppression.

I Dreamed You Were Here features essays by artists Zak Foster @zakfoster.quilts and Brian Hitselberger @brianhitsstudio , whose insights into Wohl’s work and process further illuminate her practice. Also included are facsimiles of Wohl’s embroidered to-do list series I’ll Take Care of It - an intimate look into the care and relationships of the artist herself.

48 pages, color laserprint with single-color riso inserts. Edition of 200.

Interested in a copy? We are more than happy to ship! $30 + $4 for shipping. DM either Brian or Jessica for a a copy.

Images from my recent exhibition Poems, installed at The Arts Federation in Lafayette, Indiana.

This show was structured around a table installation I made and positioned towards the center of the gallery - titled “Almanac.” For the last several years, “arranging” has been one of the primary verbs at play in my studio practice. I’ve been using the wall as a surface for this kind of activity, but in this show wanted to use the space of the desk, so that it might be seen from above.

The almanac is a kind of reference containing facts, schedules, information and - especially important to me - weather forecasts. It’s also generally a book. For me, this piece was a place to think through the larger themes running through the work, while also making an image of and a stage for that thinking. A kind of un-bound book that might shift and evolve from one project to the next, year after year. taken in The Arts Federation - TAF by @brianhitsstudio

One last carousel documenting the process behind a piece from Poems- my solo exhibition at @theartsfed, which closed this past week.

Somewhere along the line, I started to embrace baroque, circuitous and largely invisible routes to arrive at finished work that really felt like it was my own. This piece is an example of those habits of mind.

Another from Poems, my solo exhibition recently on view at @theartsfed in Lafayette, IN.

One thing I’ve taken pleasure in getting older is revisiting old work and strategies in my process. Passing makes use of an old Polaroid from an installation I made a few years ago at @the.weather.station. taken in The Arts Federation - TAF by @brianhitsstudio

My solo exhibition, Poems, is on view at @theartsfed through May 29. New collage and work on paper, as well as a table installation (and window piece). If you’re in the area, I hope you can drop by to check it out!

IG feels like a nice medium to speak a bit more deeply about some of these pieces. Here’s some thoughts on Blue Light- one of my favorites in the show. by @brianhitsstudio

My solo exhibition Poems opened this past Friday at @theartsfed, right here in Lafayette. Thank you all so much for coming out to the opening! I had a ton of fun, and it’s always a privilege to have an audience for one’s work.

This is my tenth solo exhibition as an artist. I feel like I get a little closer to something undefinable every time I organize my work in this way, and this around is no different. Poems wil be on view through May 29th- if you’d like to meet me at the gallery for a your, or are passing through, please don’t hesitate to get in touch! by @brianhitsstudio

This Friday, my solo exhibition Poems will open right here in Lafayette, Indiana at The Arts Federation @theartsfed.

This show brings together new and recent work on paper - layered works in print, collage and text.

I’ve admired the beautiful galleries at The Arts Fed since moving to Lafayette 6 years ago. I’m delighted to have the opportunity to show this new work there for the first time.

Hope you can make it! taken in The Arts Federation - TAF by @brianhitsstudio
