Hello again…it’s been a while. Honestly, I wasn’t sure I would ever feel safe or brave enough to come back to Instagram, but it’s time.

For those of you who don’t know me personally, I’m a journalist who for years was an assistant and producer at NBC News in New York. In 2017, I made a confidential HR complaint reporting one of the most powerful faces in media for sexual harassment and assault.

In a way, I was fortunate: NBC took my complaint seriously, investigated it, confronted and then fired the highest paid morning news anchor in history. In other ways, I wasn’t: reporters quickly found me and a tabloid revealed my identity.

One day, I was a normal person on Instagram, posting stupid pictures of my knitting and Martha Stewart recipes. The next, tabloids were harassing anyone connected to me online. Once you’ve had grown men follow you with cameras and slide notes under your door, you never forget. Your name and face and life itself never feel fully your own again.

But when the worst parts of your life become an open book, you have no choice but to be vulnerable…and that’s been an unexpected gift. People react not with cruelty but kindness, and a basic human need to understand and be understood. That’s why I’m here now.

It’s also why I wrote a book untangling the messy gray areas of sexual harassment, assault and their aftermath, both through my own experiences and dozens of interviews. I spent years writing and reporting so others can be better informed than I was, make better choices than I did and have better options than I had..and so no one else feels as alone as I once did.

Given the myriad stories that continue to emerge of powerful people preying sexually on subordinates, it’s as important now as when I started @unspeakablethingsbook six years ago.

One last thing: once you’ve talked publicly about something as serious as sexual assault, it feels as though you can never be anything but serious again–that it must define you. Hard pass. I still knit and laugh and am as politically incorrect as ever. So, come for some long overdue conversations about power and consent, stay for the awkward jokes and who knows what else! Thanks for being here. by @brookenevils
