Recent work + life updates 💫 Between freelance creative design projects and launching @legroomshow, it has been a wildly fulfilling couple of months. Celebrating some big wins (!!) and while I can’t share all my client work, I wanted to feature some of my favorite personal projects in addition to my ongoing collaborations at NYU Steinhardt. My inbox is open for some additional client projects this summer, and I’ve been thrilled to working with folks & businesses large and small for both graphic design and marketing strategy.

Oh, and THANK YOUU for all the love at Leg Room – each follow/like/share here and on YouTube helps the project immensely (Almost at 500 followers in just 3 months!)

Making theater again…highly recommend. Working with a fantastic group of folks who did some zoom rehearsals, one studio day, and one recording day with me…highly recommend. A million thank-you’s. This Aughts team showed me what dreams are made of. Hey now…

📸 @angelaofyork 💜

We only had eight hours in the studio to set up, record, take photos, and wrap. I started the day scurrying up and down that ladder six times to program each light. And don’t get me started on those three music stands I went through hell to get to Brooklyn, only to realize halfway through the first run of the show, they were totally killing the vibe.

Leading a room again. The best, most natural feeling in the world.

During lunch I threw the music stands in the corner and we completely altered the recording set up. It was also ruvealed to us the day of recording we couldn’t wear shoes in the space. My company dress code hadn’t included sock preferences and I felt terrible everyone had to just rock with it.

It was one of the best days of my life, but I was so busy the only picture of me I took was the floor around me being a mess because I was so fucking proud of what we were building.

I went into the day having the key art image storyboarded, but it took a couple of staged shots for us to figure out the photo would just be better if they actually pushed through each other. And that did the trick!

“Yes we’re going to film it, but we’re gonna do it in like super slow motion. Did anyone see Ivo Van Hove’s pre-Covid masterpiece West Side Story revival? No? Well…”

I didn’t write Joey’s closing monologue until the day before recording, and in the edit, I cut over 10 minutes of moments I felt I was overcompensating in storytelling. This included a two-page long TV host monologue as the cold open; a far more expansive scene before the bedroom; and a long epilogue scene. All those segments are in the final mix, but reduced to about 2-6 lines a piece.

Inspo board for the characters of Ruby and Joseph. It was important to me that the show itself was an emotional exorcism and not a hyper-realistic coming-of-age chat.

What is “Aughts” as a project? As a story?

“Aughts” is a play I wrote and had put in the drawer, but revisited when I had the idea to record it as a “radio play.” The end product is a script visualizer blurs the lines of what we consider a “theatrical” experience. It’s a true, capital-P “Play” in the sense it’s two (primarily) two people in a room having a fiery conversation in real-time. The storytelling is enhanced with score, sound effects, and plotting that elevates the conversation to a full world. This includes my favorite elements of live theater, in manipulating time and space before an audience. I have worked tirelessly to keep those moments, down to a dialogue-less prologue, intact as it would be on the stage, but tuned through sound.

As a story, it’s two childhood friends reckoning with their 27th birthdays. Those friends (one a disgraced popstar impossibly trying to reclaim her career; the other a withdrawn college dropout who sees no way out) refuse to believe they’re the ones who had a better a life. As they battle to concede their own failings, they reckon with lives not lived, staring down the barrel of the ones they have.

The script visualizer and audio streams on YouTube this Thursday. AughtsThePlay.com to subscribe and pay-what-you-can.
