Now on view in A/B Gallery: the 2026 Annual Faculty & Staff Exhibition

The Department of Art is fortunate in being led and staffed by many thoughtful and skilled artists. Each year, we start the semester off with an exhibition to showcase recent artworks by our full-time faculty, adjunct professors, and members of staff. This year’s exhibition is the first of its kind in our new gallery spaces, and was organized and installed by our Gallery Management course (Art 341). The show will be on view through October 12th, 2026.

A/B Galleries are located in the ARTS Building rooms 1104-1110, and are open from 9am-5pm Monday through Friday.

An exciting part of having a new building is the opportunity for new gallery spaces purpose-built for contemporary art. We’re proud to announce that the A / B Gallery now holds its very first exhibition!

West Campus Alliances is a print exchange program that saw students and faculty working together to produce an edition of 29 unique prints. Students acted as master printers for faculty as well as producing their own work. At the end of the exchange program, every participating artist received a copy of all 29 prints! The department has placed its suite of prints on view to celebrate the opening of the new ARTS building, and visitors have already been greeted by the show as they enter through the south doors. The exhibition will be on view through the rest of this week in A/B Gallery, rooms 1104-1106 on the first floor of the new Arts Building! Come take a look!

We are also excited to announce our newly refreshed Galleries website, which has undergone an overhaul to include images of past exhibitions from 2022 onward. You can take a look through the chapters of our recent history through the link in our bio. If you would like to share a past Department of Art exhibition on the site, navigate to the info page to find out how! by @byuart

The Department of Art has officially moved into the new Arts Building, and we are so happy to be back on main campus! Housed in the building’s fourth floor, the Department has some exciting new facilities for our students, including new in-house BFA and MFA studios, new classrooms, state-of-the-art wood shop, critique spaces, new galleries, and more! We’re so excited to start the semester in these new surroundings.

If you’re coming around for New Student Orientation today (Monday, August 31st), come stop by our booth in the Museum of Art for tours between 1:30-2:30! Continuing students may join us for tours starting at the north/MOA entrance between 3:30-5:00pm. by @byuart

The Department of Art’s Summer Intensive Program offers advanced art students the opportunity to produce self-directed, independent projects under the close mentorship of faculty members. This summer, the program was led by professors Madeline Rupard (@madelinerupard) and Christopher Lynn (@thechristopherlynn) who brought an unconventional concept: to take students on a guided art tour across the American Western landscape to investigate the mundane beauty of gas stations and their culture while creating artworks. The culmination of their efforts is Rest Stop, a limited-time gallery space specifically built by the class (with extensive guidance and aid from BYU alum Eric Edvalson @sondo_nation) which houses their artworks, hosted by Will’s Canyon Stop gas station.

Rest Stop (@projectreststop) is open Friday, August 7th from 10-8 and Saturday, August 8th 10-5, and will have a closing reception Friday at 6pm. Be sure to drop by, before you hit the road for a weekend adventure of your own!

The Department of Art has had the privilege of hosting Czech artist and BYU alum Sára Kasanová Bown (BFA 2017) as our 2025-2026 Adjunct Visiting Artist. This program selects artists working outside of BYU and invites them to come and teach for a school year, while also giving them a studio space to work in and a solo exhibition at the end of the year.

Since graduating from BYU, Bown (@kasanovas) received her MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in 2022 and has shown at venues in the US, the Czech Republic, Brazil, and South Korea. We had a chance to sit down with her to talk about her experience returning to teach in the Department of Art and about her year-end exhibition, “Would it Still be Breathing?”

“Would it Still be Breathing?” was on view in the Weight Room Gallery from March 12-20, 2026. by @byuart

Happy graduation, students!

As we celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates, we’d like to thank our Department of Art community for continuing to help make this a special place on our campus. We are indebted to our students, educators, administrators and staff for their constant service and commitment.

Another transition is in store for the Department of Art this year as we move into the new Arts Building on main campus. As we look forward to the experiences our new building will provide, we also would like to take some time to reflect on the past four years spent at West Campus. The time spent at our temporary home base was not without its challenges, but this unique space provided our department with many opportunities for growth and connection. We’re grateful for the opportunity to have worked in this space, and are excited to take the lessons we’ve learned there into our bright future. by @byuart

Thanks to everyone who joined us last week for the opening of the 2026 Annual Student Exhibition! The show is on view through April 21st, and will be the final exhibition in the Weight Room gallery before we make the move back to main campus over the summer.

The Weight Room and West Campus have been only a temporary home for the Department of Art, but our time spent here has been no less special than in our more permanent spaces. While the department begins its move to the new Arts Building, we’re reflecting with gratitude on our years here and the many strange and wonderful memories we’ve made together. It is a testament to the strength of our community that no matter where we find ourselves, we continue to lift each other up.

The Weight Room is located at WCCB 2470 (1125 N University Avenue), and is open Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm. by @byuart

It’s time for Open Studios, this Thursday, April 9th!

Open Studios is a bi-annual event that opens our students’ spaces to the public to show what they have been working on over the course of the semester.

The evening will commence at our sculpture building, B66 (just off of 900 East) at 5:30, then progress to our 2D studios in the JKB (rooms 3123 and 3125) from 6-7. The final stop is at the WCCB (formerly Provo High School) from 7-8, where we will display BA and other student work in the Open Workspace (room 2010) as well as the Project Gallery (room 1050).

We hope to see you there! by @byuart

This will be the final exhibition of its kind in the Weight Room gallery, which has served as our transitory home for the past four years. Last day today!

After taking time away from her art career to start a family, MFA student Emily Hawkins returns to consider the tricky balance required to walk along the line of artist and mother. In her thesis exhibition “I will defend my self”, Hawkins uses a range of materials and applications to navigate the tension between two positions of life.

“I will defend my self” is on view in the Weight Room from February 26th through March 6th, 2026.

The Weight Room is located at WCCB 2470 (1125 N University Avenue), and is open Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm. by @byuart

In case you missed it:

Born and raised in northern Germany, MFA student Melanie Fischer’s thesis exhibition draws on her grandfather’s experiences and finds her own parallels. Titled ‘Entwurzelt’, the German word for ‘displacement’, the show explores ideas of passing down means of solace through moments of trauma, and making lasting connections through family histories.

Entwurzelt was on view in the Weight Room from February 12-21st. by @byuart
