Built Here brought their Family Meal to Café Colucci, gathering Oakland entrepreneurs and small business owners around our table for dinner, conversation, and community.

We served a family-style Ethiopian feast with cocktails, mocktails, and a palm wine pairing from our friends at @ikengawines . And everyone left with a @brundospices spice of their own. 🌶️

Built Here’s Family Meals are about connecting local entrepreneurs over a shared meal while supporting local restaurants—something we’re always happy to make room for at our table.

We’re also excited that Daniel Aderaw Yeshiwas has joined Built Here’s inaugural Founders Circle. More to come as Café Colucci + Brundo join them for the Oakland Entrepreneur Retreat later this month. Check the bio @built.here for more info. taken in Café Colucci by @cafecolucci

ይስከን: Yeskèn: Coffee Ceremony
Tomorrow, Saturday, October 3 | 2–4 pm
Kala Gallery @kalagallery_berkeley

Join us tomorrow for a special presentation of Ainslee Alem Robson’s (@ahhslay) practice, taking place within her installation ይስከን: Yeskèn: Unsettled Grounds, currently on view as part of the exhibition What We Hold.

In Amharic, “yeskèn” refers to the time it takes for coffee grounds to settle at the bottom of the jebena, the clay pot used in the traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. The grounds must settle naturally - the time cannot be rushed. This moment of waiting becomes an invitation to pause, gather, and reflect.

Through the coffee ceremony, Ainslee considers coffee, food, immigrant communities, and community elders as vessels of intergenerational memory - living, unconventional archives that carry histories, stories, and cultural knowledge across generations.

Join us for an afternoon of coffee, conversation, and reflection!

Saturday, October 3, 2–4 pm
Kala Gallery, 2990 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley
Space is limited. Please RSVP.

The Reception at Cafe Colucci @cafecolucci, 4-6pm

🔗 RSVP via the link in our bio.

Special thanks to the supporters of Kala’s Fellowship Program, including the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts @warholfoundation, The Phyllis C. Come have an espresso, eat a little something, hang out with us—and help raise some money for Ainslee Alem Robson’s feature documentary Empress Taytu. ☕️

After ይስከን: Yeskèn: Coffee Ceremony at Kala Gallery, we’re heading over to Café Colucci for light bites, espresso martinis (NA option too), good conversation, and a fundraiser for the film.

Empress Taytu is a feature documentary about Cleveland’s first Ethiopian restaurant and its historic namesake in Addis Ababa—moving between the two cities through memory, migration, community, and intertwined histories of resistance.

☕️ Coffee Ceremony @ Kala Gallery
2–4pm

🍸 Reception + Empress Taytu Fundraiser @ Café Colucci
4–6pm

Ticket includes light bites + an espresso martini. Part of the proceeds will support the making of this film.

Space is limited, so grab a spot for both. Links in bio.

Yeskèn is supported by Kala Gallery, Meyer Sound, Café Colucci + Brundo Spice and is part of Nexus Black Art Week. taken in Café Colucci by @cafecolucci

From the farm to Mandela Partners to the kitchen at Café Colucci. 🌱

The Oaklandside/East Bay Nosh recently took a deep dive into the economics behind Café Colucci’s delicious Vegan Combo — and in doing so told part of a story that Café Colucci and Mandela Partners have been building together for years.

It’s a relationship that connects local farmers, Mandela Partners, Café Colucci, and ultimately the people sitting around our tables.

Mandela works directly with small-scale local farmers, helping connect their produce to communities, restaurants, and businesses across Oakland and the East Bay. Through our longtime partnership, produce from those farmers makes its way through Mandela’s West Oakland distribution center and into Café Colucci’s kitchen, where it becomes part of dishes like the Vegan Combo.

The article looks at what happens when rising costs, fuel prices, global supply chains, and the realities facing small farms all meet on a single plate - and why relationships like these matter even more when the economics get difficult.

We’re grateful to the farmers who grow our food, to the teams at Mandela Partners and Café Colucci who keep that connection moving, and to East Bay Nosh/The Oaklandside for taking the time to trace the story from its source all the way to the plate.

This one goes deep! It’s worth saving to read later or clicking the link in bio for the full interactive experience.

Thanks to @calliopearkilic for researching and writing this. taken in Oakland, California by @cafecolucci

@eastbayexpress just dropped the Best of the East Bay and we have two reasons to celebrate.

We’re honored to be named Best Vegetarian and Best Dining Value in the East Bay Express Best of the East Bay awards.

For 30+ years, we’ve been sharing the beauty of Ethiopian food and spices in the East Bay. It means a lot to have that recognized.

And congratulations to our fellow category winners @thebutchersson_official and @mamaoakland . We’re in very good company. ❤️

Thank you, East Bay, for continuing to show up hungry. taken in Oakland, California by @cafecolucci
