Dear Young ChangeMaker,

In a world full of myriad of distractions, focus is not just an escape route for young, purposeful and visionary people.

It's one among some of the unbending prerequisite principles needed to staying relevant and on track while on pursuit of a preferred future.

We hear that life is full of colours. Yet It's true beauty is only radiant when purposeful living is not substituted with chasing shadows or illusion fabricated by other folks.

Please let's prioritize our time wisely, harness potentials intentionally and commit discipline, faith and diligence to purpose. It's alright not to see results now, however we can't deny the compounding interest of what we doing today in the nearest future.

What are the other things you are doing differently that is helping you grow, I want learn from your comments.

The Niger Delta is home to a wealth of creative talent, but limited opportunities, funding and industry support have kept many from reaching their potential.

The Niger Delta Creative Industry Expo (ND Cre8 EX) aims to change this by connecting artists, investors and businesses, promoting intellectual property rights, sustainable financing and AI skills.

Through a ten-year vision, the initiative hopes to build a thriving creative economy, empower young talent and reshape how the region is seen beyond its oil wealth and troubled history.

Their stories raise an important question: how can families and schools protect young people with sickle cell disease without limiting their independence, friendships and ambitions?

From stigma and daily care to school support and emerging treatments, their experiences highlight the need for understanding, informed care and room to thrive.

Thirty-seven suspected illegal miners died after being arrested and held in NSCDC custody in Niger State. Survivors described overcrowding, breathing difficulties and an alleged sprayed substance, while the cause of the deaths remains under investigation.

The incident has triggered protests, a curfew, an investigation ordered by President Bola Tinubu and the suspension of some officials. This reel examines what happened and the unanswered questions surrounding the deaths.

When does political mobilisation become undue influence?

Former President Goodluck Jonathan wants Nigeria to confront this now.

Reacting to the Osun governorship election, he flagged the growing presence of governors, aides and security personnel at off-cycle polls in Osun, Ekiti and Ondo.

Jonathan says it creates apprehension and pressure, and is calling National Peace Committee to convene a national dialogue with INEC, parties, NASS and civil society to set clear boundaries before this becomes normal.

So we ask you: where should the line be drawn? 👇

"Different contexts, common aspirations."

Our journalist @calledamayindi asked Ishaq Bilal Osaihi what this phrase means to him personally.

Young people are often described as the leaders of tomorrow. But for many young Nigerians, tomorrow feels less like a promise and more like a question.

What happens after graduation? Where will the next job come from? Can a young person build a business without access to capital, mentorship and markets? Can digital skills translate into real economic opportunities? And must leaving Nigeria become the price of pursuing a better future?

While writing the International Youth Day article for The Pointer, I spoke with young people and youth advocates about these questions and what they believe needs to change.

Their perspectives revealed a generation caught between

ambition and uncertainty. Joseph Oghenemaro is thinking not only about fulfilling his dreams, but about the kind of future he wants for his family.

Ebruba Tansi wants stronger security, technological training, and opportunities to help young people become economically independent. Favour Torlowei, approaching graduation, admitted that she sometimes gets scared about the future because of the scarcity of jobs.

Yet none of these voices is simply asking to be given something.

They are asking for an environment where their education, skills, ideas and creativity can become meaningful livelihoods.

As Milton Sagboje put it, the conversation needs to move from “what can government give the youth” to “what environment can government create for young people to build?”

This year's International Youth Day theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” captures that reality.

Young people may live different lives and face different challenges. Still, many are ultimately asking for the same opportunity: the chance to learn, work, create, contribute and build a future they can believe in.

Swipe through and hear what young Nigerians are saying about the future they want.

What if the person attending to you in a hospital is not actually a nurse?

In Nigeria's private healthcare sector, "auxiliary nurses" are being placed in frontline roles meant for trained professionals administering drugs, handling procedures, and carrying a title that patients instinctively trust.

Our investigation, From Auxiliary Nurses to Auxiliary Surgeons, reveals how cost-cutting by hospital owners, weak regulatory enforcement, and a system running on borrowed competence are quietly putting patients at risk.

One patient's arm swelled around a drip site. The auxiliary worker panicked and ran. A cleaner reportedly assisted with a delivery in Uyo. These are symptoms of a deeper systemic failure in healthcare.

The professionals we spoke to are not blaming the workers. They are pointing at the system that created the conditions.

✅ Hospital owners choosing cheap labour over patient safety
✅ Regulatory bodies are too underfunded to enforce existing rules
✅ A government yet to make quality healthcare truly accessible

Until Nigeria properly defines these roles, regulates their training, and strengthens enforcement, the system will continue to substitute convenience for expertise.

One shortcut. One unqualified hand. One patient at a time.

When Professor PLO Lumumba, while speaking at the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit 2026, asked his spectators, “We are quick to say we are 1.4 billion. But what are we doing about the 1.4 billion?” he was really asking whether Africa sees its people as a burden to manage or a market to build.

We speak proudly about our population, our minerals, our land, and our youthful energy, yet we still wait for outsiders to tell us that we are investable. For me, this shows we still struggle with our self-esteem and identity. When we can't see the investor in ourselves, we tend to look to others.

What struck me was his challenge to our idea of who qualifies as an investor. Too often, African governments design economic strategies around foreign capital while overlooking African entrepreneurs, pension funds, banks, and institutions that already understand the continent better than anyone else.

Lumumba’s message also brought the African Continental Free Trade Area into sharper focus. AfCFTA will not become transformational because it was signed. It will matter only when states deliberately build industries, infrastructure, skills, and reliable institutions that allow African businesses to trade competitively with one another.
