Calabash (@calabash.nyc) is the Afro-Caribbean brasserie and bakery from award-winning chef Camari Mick (@camari_mick ), and it is unlike anywhere else in the city. 🍽️ Named after the vessel that has traveled across the African diaspora for centuries, the menu follows a similar path, from West Africa through the Caribbean to the US East Coast. Daytime service brings naturally fermented breads, laminated pastries, and coffees and teas from Kenya and Ethiopia, plus brasserie-style lunch dishes like Cornbread Pancakes and Suya Frita, a steak served with maduros. ✨

Dinner is a five-course tasting menu served Friday and Saturday, featuring dishes like Hoppin John Dolma and Red Snapper with Étouffée-style gravy. 🥗 Calabash also stands out for its alcohol-free beverage program, honoring African herbalism with house-fermented and adaptogenic mocktails. 🍸 The 30-seat space showcases rotating work by Black and Brown artists, and once a month they host a Pay What You Can dinner. 🌟

When I met @camari_mick six years ago, she was making savory ice cream and other desserts that went far beyond expectations. It’s been so wonderful to watch her journey in the years since. Her new restaurant, @calabash.nyc opens next month and I can’t wait to try it.

Testing retesting, hating it. Changing my mind. Testing it again, eat it again. Love it. It grew on me. Let’s tweak one more thing. Add it to the menu. Wait change that verbiage.

I was so honored to have been able to cook for some of the most beautiful people during The African American Film Festival on Martha’s Vineyard last week. Met some new people, drove 5hrs when all of our flights were canceled but we made it work! by @camari_mick

JFK ✈️ CUN

Salt in the air, smoke in the kitchen, cabbage leaves still warm from someone’s hands.

@etereoauberge has a way of making you feel like you never left, even when it’s your first time back in a minute. We cooked, we laughed through the heat, we dressed up for no reason other than the sun going down just right.
